after furious Pep Guardiola row
Darwin Nunez squared up to Pep Guardiola after Liverpool’s draw with Manchester City on Saturday, with the Liverpool star now being slammed for his part in the argument

Darwin Nunez has been told to “concentrate” on why he’s not scoring more goals instead of picking fights after confronting Pep Guardiola.

Nunez has been in sparkling form this season, but drew a blank as Liverpool fought back to claim a point against Manchester City on Saturday. He was substituted off with five minutes to play, but was the centre of discussion after the final whistle.

As the two benches shook hands at full-time, Nunez could be seen pointing his finger in the face of Guardiola. The duo exchanged words, with Reds boss Klopp having to man-handle his star striker away from the City boss as the argument continued.

Despite three Liverpool coaches surrounding him, Nunez continued to attempt to shout at Guardiola, who was being held back by Reds assistant Pep Lijnders. Nunez’s actions in that incident have now been condemned by Garth Crooks, who demanded the Uruguayan alter his focus.

“This was a good performance by Liverpool at Manchester City, although Darwin Nunez tried his best to spoil it,” the former Tottenham star told BBC Sport as part of his Team of the Week column.

“Nunez should really spend his time concentrating on why he’s not scoring more goals instead of picking fights and venting his frustrations with the opposition manager because he’s been substituted.”

Both Klopp and Guardiola played down the incident during their post-match media duties. The Liverpool boss insisted that emotions had merely gotten the better of Nunez and the City manager.

“Emotions, emotions. I’m not sure I’m the one who should explain it, to be honest, because I was absolutely not involved – surprisingly! I love them both, so I tried to calm the situation down, without knowing 100 percent what happened,” Klopp said.

“I didn’t understand a word. That’s it. I really think it’s nothing more than what’s already sorted, to be honest. It’s emotional. Pep wants to win, we want to win. Both didn’t win, so there’s obviously nobody really happy and then these things can happen.

“That has nothing to do with the ‘fierce rivalry’. This situation after the game is nothing to do with the ‘historical, fierce rivalry’. I don’t think Darwin Nunez knows anything about that, to be honest!”
