Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has confirmed he has already begun his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury he suffered at the Africa Cup of Nations last week – and insisted he will “do everything possible to be ready as soon as possible”.

The Liverpool forward is expected to be out of action until mid-February after suffering a hamstring injury in Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana last Thursday. After discussions between the Egyptian FA and Anfield chiefs, it was decided he would return to Merseyside to begin his recovery instead of remaining in Ivory Coast – where the finals are being held.

As a result, both the 31-year-old and Liverpool came in for some stern criticism from sections of the Pharaohs’ camp as manager Rui Vitoria voiced his displeasure at Jurgen Klopp and Salah’s advisor, Ramy Abbas Issa, for speaking out about the forward’s injury arrangments before the release of an official statement from the Egyptian FA. Some publications in his homeland even questioned Salah’s commitment to the national team.

However, Salah brushed off the criticism when taking to social media on Thursday afternoon and revealed it had always been agreed that his rehabilitation would be overseen by Liverpool’s medical team back on Merseyside. The forward, who has scored 14 goals and helped the Reds to the top of the Premier League this season, also hinted that he could be back sooner than scheduled, proving his loyalty to Egypt.

Writing to 18.7 million followers on X, formerly Twitter, Salah said: “Yesterday [Wednesday] I started the treatment and rehabilitation program and I will do everything possible to be ready as soon as possible and return to the national team as was agreed upon from the beginning… I also love it and its people…try harder.”

Egypt, who qualified for the AFCON round-of-16 after finishing second in Group B, face the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday afternoon. If Vitoria’s side are victorious, they will face either Equatorial Guinea or Guinea in the quarter-final next week, with the semi-final and final scheduled for February 7 and February 11 respectively.

Providing an update on Salah’s condition earlier this week, Reds boss Klopp confirmed the forward could still represent his side at this year’s AFCON should Egypt reach the last four of the competition, at least.

But with Salah targeting a return before a potential February 11 final, it begs the question could he feature for Liverpool in the coming days if Egypt fail to prolong their quest for a record-extending eighth continental title?
