Newcastle United bid farewell to their UEFA Champions League dreams as they exited the competition at the group stage. Despite a spirited performance and a 2-1 victory against AC Milan, the Magpies found themselves at the bottom of the group, concluding a 20-year hiatus from Europe’s premier cup competition.

The atmosphere inside St James’ Park was electric as the Geordie faithful rallied behind their team on this crucial night. Kieran Trippier and Fikayo Tomori showcased early determination for Newcastle, but it was Joelinton who broke the deadlock with a thunderous strike, propelling the Magpies into second place in the group standings.

However, joy turned to anxiety as news of Paris Saint-Germain’s equalizer against Dortmund filtered through. Despite Christian Pulisic restoring parity for Newcastle, a double blow followed with Warren Zaïre-Emery’s equalizer and PSG reclaiming the advantage on the head-to-head rule. Bruno Guimarães and Callum Wilson had their chances, but Milan’s resilience prevailed, turning the tide with Samuel Chukwueze’s clinical finish on the counter-attack.

Steve Howe’s disappointment was palpable as the Magpies succumbed to a third consecutive defeat, ending their European journey prematurely. The agony was amplified by the realization that their adventure concludes before Christmas.

On the other side, AC Milan showcased remarkable resilience, securing third place in the group and a ticket to the UEFA Europa League. Stefano Pioli’s side, despite finishing level on points with PSG, fell short on the head-to-head rule but will now look forward to European football in the New Year.

For Newcastle, it’s a bitter pill to swallow, marking the end of a historic campaign with hopes dashed at the group stage. The fans, who played a crucial role in creating an intense atmosphere at St James’ Park, must now shift their focus to domestic competitions, while AC Milan can reflect on their journey in Europe with a consolation prize awaiting them in the Europa League.

Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain secured their spot in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages with a thrilling 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund, joining the leaders in Group F for the 12th consecutive season. Despite Dortmund’s already confirmed place in the knockout stages, both teams played with determination, creating a spectacle for fans.

The match saw numerous close calls, including Marius Wolf and Kang-in Lee missing opportunities at either end. A miraculous recovery by Niklas Süle denied Kylian Mbappé, adding to the suspense. Bradley Barcola’s curled effort hit the post, while Randal Kolo Muani’s shot trickled wide.

The second half maintained the intensity, with Niclas Füllkrug setting up Karim Adeyemi for the opening goal in the 51st minute. PSG responded swiftly, as Warren Zaïre-Emery’s deflected strike leveled the score five minutes later. Mbappé thought he had put PSG in the lead, but an offside call nullified the goal.

The action continued until the final whistle, with Bradley Barcola having a late opportunity to secure victory for PSG. However, his shot at a tight angle went straight to Dortmund’s goalkeeper, Gregor Kobel. The draw extended PSG’s unbeaten run to six matches, setting a positive tone for their campaign.
