As a significantly altered England team labored to a 1-0 victory over Australia, Ollie Watkins scored from close range.

Eddie Nketiah was passed over in favor of Watkins up front, and he hit the post in the first half. However, on minute 57, Watkins made a crucial play to tap in a cross from Jack Grealish.

After scoring against Ivory Coast in March 2022, it was the Aston Villa star’s first outing.

Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold’s performance stood out, as did the performances of Brighton and Crystal Palace stars Lewis Dunk and Sam Johnstone.

Although nominally playing at right back, it was clear from the first whistle that Alexander-Arnold was assuming the hybrid role he has played for his team this season.

The performance of the right-back has been compiled and is available for viewing below.

Gareth Southgate had food for thought as he prepared for the European Championships in the summer of 2018. The Liverpool star’s skill and assurance on the ball impressed him. Alexander-Arnold was constantly trying to get the ball and control play, whereas England struggled to go into fifth gear.

The right-back’s switch also gave Jack Grealish the opportunity to create the space needed to set up Watkins’ goal.

Alexander-Arnold played at right-back for just that one play before switching to the midfield permanently for the final 30 minutes of the dull contest.

Gareth Southgate, the manager of England, told Channel 4 after the game: “We made a lot of changes, which made it incredibly difficult for the players. When you don’t have many caps in your resume, playing international football can be challenging. I presented them with an extremely difficult problem because we were not working together. Australia was good; they were organized and athletic. After putting them in the position, I’m happy for the victory.

“We’re thrilled with Ollie Watkins and have made two debuts. Although it was difficult for the players, there were some positives. We know we can play better. We noticed several things that we were already familiar with. On this level, you must give players a chance.

“When we were building, we were a back three that was too thin. Getting the ball to our wingers’ feet and then advancing from there gave us the most satisfaction.

“We have a ton of depth in some spots, but not in others. We must never stop looking. Our under-21 team is doing a great job on the field. There must be rivalry for positions, and naturally, some seasoned players are hurt.
