Liverpool booked their place in the next round of the League Cup with a 3-2 win against Brighton & Hove Albion, with Jarell Quansah back in the starting XI.

The England youth international has endured a tough season so far with the Reds after Quansah was hooked off at half-time in Arne Slot’s first professional game as Liverpool manager, with the defender yet to really recover from that moment.

With Quansah making a mistake that led to a late Brighton goal tonight, the Liverpool youngster once again didn’t shower himself in any glory at the back for the Anfield side, with the League Cup a great chance for the youngster to show his quality.

Yet pundit Natasha Dowie noticed something between Virgil van Dijk and Quansah at full-time.

Quansah comforted by Van Dijk after the full-time whistle

Speaking on LFC TV, the former Liverpool striker noted how Van Dijk went straight to Quansah to comfort the defender after his performance at the Amex Stadium, where the youngster again made a mistake.

Dowie said: “Quansah looked disappointed coming off, straight away Virgil van Dijk was straight around him, Cody Gakpo was around him as well telling him to get about it and I think that’s key, it’s all about the squad.”

With Quansah one of the youngest players in the Liverpool dressing room, being comforted by a figure as big as Van Dijk will be key for the England youth international in how he responds to tonight’s performance on the south coast.

And from what Liverpool fans have seen from Quansah in the last 12 months, supporters know that there is a top-class player in there just waiting to come out, with the defender a talent who could become key for the Reds in the years to come.

Quansah will want to respond in a big way for Liverpool

It’s been a hard season for Quansah under Slot, with the defender starting the new Premier League campaign in the worst possible way with the centre-back failing to make himself look any better under the Liverpool manager.

And after another poor performance, Quansah knows he has to respond in a big way for Liverpool in the coming weeks, with the fixture list meaning the youngster will feature again sooner rather than later for the Reds.

Indeed, Quansah has the talent to become a top defender for Liverpool, and the sooner the England youth international rediscovers his confidence, the sooner the youngster will be back to his best at long last.
