Manchester City were dealt a blow in their preparations for the upcoming Liverpool clash, with Erling Haaland suffering an ankle injury with Norway.

Erling Haaland has handed Manchester City a major injury scare ahead of their clash with Liverpool next week after picking up a knock while on international duty with Norway. The striker has been in sensational form again and will be a crucial player for Pep Guardiola’s side as they host their fellow title contenders at the Etihad Stadium in nine days’ time, but Haaland may face a race to recover.

The striker was brought on for the second half of Norway’s friendly with the Faroe Islands on Thursday after starting on the bench.

But Haaland faces a new concern after appearing to suffer a recurrence of the ankle injury that forced him to sit out the second half of City’s 6-1 thrashing over Bournemouth at the beginning of November.

The striker stretched for a ball following a cross from a team-mate and appeared to get his foot stuck in the turf as he landed on the grass. The 23-year-old required treatment on his ankle before deciding to remain on the pitch for the rest of the game.

Norway boss Stale Solbakken has confirmed Haaland will be assessed by their medical staff, which will be a cause for concern amongst City supporters.

“I think it’s going well. But I haven’t spoken to him,” Solbakken told Norwegian outlet TV2. “At least he got back in [to the game]. It can’t be that bad then!”

It remains to be seen whether Haaland will face Scotland on Sunday. But the team’s doctor, Ola Sand, gave a much more concerning update after their initial assessment of the frontman, hinting that the striker’s ankle is in a ‘vulnerable’ condition after suffering a setback in coping with an underlying issue.

“It was much of the same that happened against Bournemouth a week and a half ago. He has had it before too,” Sand said to the same outlet. “He gets a slight twist in his ankle, where he is a bit vulnerable. It hurts a lot right away, and then it goes away pretty quickly.

“Now he will receive some treatment, then there will be peace and rest and then we will see how he is tomorrow morning. We have already spoken to City. Erling has spoken to both City and [chief doctor] Mario [Pafundi] already.”

There is no indication yet as to just how severe Haaland’s injury is, but Guardiola will be anxious to find out the extent of the problem with their vital clash with Liverpool just over a week away

Haaland has struck 13 goals in 12 games this season and notched twice in the 4-4 draw with Chelsea. He missed the 4-1 win over the Reds last season with a groin problem and will no doubt be desperate to recover in time.
