Arsenal may look at the contract situation of their squad in the coming weeks with Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool stand-off a timely

Mohamed Salah’s contract at Liverpool expires next June and Arsenal must avoid a similar situation in 2026

Mohamed Salah’s contract situation at Liverpool continues to be a major talking point in the Premier League with the Egyptian now into the last year of his deal with the Reds.

The 32-year-old has been brilliant for Liverpool since signing from AS Roma in 2017, scoring 214 goals in 352 appearances since making the £36.9million move to Anfield. It’s possible this is Salah’s last season on Merseyside, however, with the club yet to open talks with the right winger over his future.

Josh Kroenke asked Erling Haaland question as Edu tasked with nightmare Arsenal striker hunt

“Honestly, I had a good summer,” Salah told Sky Sports after Liverpool’s win over Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend. “I had a long time to stay with myself, try to think positive because as you know it’s my last year at the club. I just want to enjoy it, I don’t want to think about it but I feel free to play football, we will see next year.”

He added: “To be fair, I was coming to the game and I said: ‘It could be my last time.’ The club has not talked to me yet so I will play my last season and see at the end of the season.”

Liverpool letting Salah leave for nothing would be a disaster and Arsenal may do well to learn from the situation when looking at their own players under contract. When looking at the members of the Gunners’ squad whose contracts expire on June 30, 2026, two notable names stand out.

Oleksandr Zinchenko and Leandro Trossard now have less than two years remaining on their current deals. If both players do not sign new contracts with the club between now and next summer, they would be in a very similar situation to Salah right now. Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney are in the same position, although the club are believed to hold the option for a further year regarding the Japanese international, while Tierney is surplus to require

Zinchenko has played a big part in Arsenal’s transition from top-four contenders to title challengers, with the Ukraine international having a big impact on the pitch as well as off it since joining from Manchester City in July 2022. The same can be said for Trossard, who has earned himself the reputation of being a deadly finisher, contributing to 31 goals in 71 appearances since moving to north London from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2023.

So, Salah’s situation at Liverpool should serve as a nice reminder to Edu and Arteta as they look to resolve the futures of Zinchenko and Trossard one way or another. It’s possible Zinchenko is moved on either in January or next summer, given Arsenal have new signing Riccardo Calafiori, Jurrien Timber and Jakub Kiwior all capable of playing left-back.
