Arsenal are interested in signing Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino after impressing for Spain at Euro 2024, with a move touted for the ex-Newcastle man

The potential signing of Mikel Merino could impact a number of players within the Arsenal squad. The Spain international has been linked with a move to the Gunners after impressing for Spain at Euro 2024. He scored the winner during their 2-1 extra-time win over Germany on Friday.

According to The Athletic, the Gunners want to sign a new central midfielder this summer and Merino has emerged as someone they are interested in. It’s added that Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the player’s ‘talent and physicality’ and believes he can add an extra dimension to the Arsenal squad ahead of next season.

If the Gunners did get a deal over the line to sign Merino, his arrival could have a major impact on the rest of the squad. In particular, Declan Rice could be affected. Last season, the 25-year-old was predominantly used as the defensive midfielder in the three-man midfield system. However, he ended the season playing further forward in the more advanced role with Thomas Partey utilised as the No.6.
