Liverpool chief executive Michael Edwards is spearheading the club’s search for a new number six.

That is as per Football Insider. Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the club have started planning for the January transfer window and are already aware of where they want to strengthen.

Working alongside sporting director Richard Hughes, the club’s recruitment department has already begun assessing their options after missing out on Martin Zubimendi. However, they will not see themselves drawn into signing players for the sake of it. That will ensure any new arrivals come as ONLY the right fit for the club.

#6 for the Reds?
Since Arne Slot’s arrival, Ryan Gravenberch has thrived in a new position, but there is still a consensus that Liverpool require a specialised backup in that role. Edwards’ return to the forefront, with his preference for a data-driven approach, has rejuvenated the club’s transfer strategy.

While the lack of summer signings disappointed many fans, the club maintains that they will only engage in the market when absolutely necessary. With Edwards at the helm, the preparations for the January window are in full swing, as Slot looks to bolster his squad.

Liverpool’s strategic use of data analytics in recruitment has yielded significant success over the years. Edwards’ meticulous approach ensures that potential signings are not only tactically compatible but also offer long-term benefits. This philosophy is critical in their current search for a defensive midfielder, a position that is vital for the team’s overall balance and effectiveness.

Despite Gravenberch’s strong performances, the need for a dedicated number six persists. Adding a specialist in this position would enhance the squad’s depth and provide more flexibility for rotation and injury cover. Liverpool’s recruitment team is actively scouting for candidates who can fit seamlessly into the team’s dynamic.
