Dominik Szoboszlai helped Liverpool defeat Leicester, which allowed them to advance to the League Cup fourth round despite their efforts.

A McAteer 2′.

Gakpo 48′ (with Gravenberch’s assistance).
Assisted by Endo, Szoboszlai 70′.

(Assist from Quansah) Jota 89′.

It has become almost routine for Liverpool to concede early because of a missed opportunity, and it was no different when they began their League Cup campaign.

Leicester were able to break when Kostas Tsimikas on the left flank collapsed like a cheap suit.

The ball fell to Kasey McAteer, who finished expertly to give Leicester a 1-0 lead inside of two minutes.

From that point on, however, Liverpool took control. Ben Doak, who had a strong claim for a penalty turned down, then hit the bar from a similar distance after being stopped by Jakub Stolarczyk at close range.

The opportunities kept coming, and Cody Gakpo almost brought the Reds back to parity before Conor Coady cleared the goal line.

Throughout the first half, Coady’s willingness to put his life—and occasionally even his face—on the line to keep out his former team was a recurring theme, leaving Liverpool frustrated at the half.

HT: Liverpool 1, Leicester.

There were no adjustments made at halftime, and three minutes after the restart, Jurgen Klopp’s patience was rewarded when Ryan Gravenberch’s deft footwork set up Gakpo for a turn and finish.

A number of players, including Gakpo, seemed to have increased their performance levels, giving the impression that the manager had spoken harsh words in the locker room.

With 25 minutes remaining in regulation time and the match still up for grabs, Klopp decided to bring on Darwin Nunez and Szoboszlai, arguably the two most adored players inside Anfield.

.

And it took Szoboszlai five minutes to give Liverpool the lead after receiving the ball from Wataru Endo, advancing from a distance, and blasting the ball in off the crossbar.

The Reds still had to defend, but they did so successfully thanks to timely challenges from Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konate, and Stefan Bajcetic to maintain the lead.

Quansah’s sprint down the right and Diogo Jota’s deft flick sealed Liverpool’s victory and gave them their fourth straight 3-1 triumph.

Curtis Jones was named the TIA Man of the Match.

Tim Robinson is the referee.

Liverpool’s starting lineup is as follows: Kelleher; Jones (Bajcetic 79′), Quansah, Konate, Tsimikas (Chambers 90′), Endo, Elliott, Gravenberch (Szoboszlai 65′), Doak (Nunez 65′), Jota, and Gakpo.

Not used as substitutes are Adrian, Van Dijk, Matip, Mac Allister, and Diaz.

Leicester: Stolarczyk; Souttar; Coady; Justin; Pereira, Choudhury, Casadei (Ndidi 57′), Albrighton (Fatawu 64′); Yunus (Dewsbury-Hall 65′), McAteer, Iheanacho (Daka 64′).

Hermansen, Faes, Vestergaard, Winks, and Mavididi were not substitutes.
