Martin Odegaard has shared a three-word message on Instagram following Arsenal’s defiant draw with Manchester City.
The Gunners were very close to claiming a sensational three points at Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon, only for John Stones to score a last-gasp winner. Erling Haaland had earlier put the home side ahead before Riccardo Calafiori netted on his full debut and Gabriel then headed Arsenal in front.
Leandro Trossard was controversially sent off just before the half-time whistle, with referee Michael Oliver showing the Belgian international a second yellow card after he kicked the ball away in frustration. “Unbelievable, I’m so proud of them,” Mikel Arteta said after the game.
“When you have survived for so many minutes, to concede in the last minute the way we did – because we had to play 97 and then it went to 99 – very disappointed. But at the same time, I cannot be prouder of them and the way they competed today.”
Arsenal went into the game without a number of players, with Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney missing the clash. Ben White also did not start due to a minor injury, although he did come on in the second half following Trossard’s red card.
Odegaard is perhaps the north Londoners’ biggest absentee, with the Gunners captain expected to be out with an ankle injury for a prolonged period. The Norwegian was still watching the clash at Etihad Stadium very closely, however, and took to Instagram after the match to praise his teammates. “Love this team,” Odegaard said, alongside a picture of the Arsenal players in a huddle on the pitch.
The result leaves Arsenal in fourth place after five games played, although they are only two points behind Premier League leaders Man City. Next up is the Carabao Cup third round tie against Bolton on Wednesday before Arteta’s side welcome Leicester City to Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
