Player Ratings

Some big numbers on a night of brilliant attacking football from Liverpool.

Full time: Liverpool 5-1 West Ham

Lightwork in the end for Arne Slot’s Reds as they start their defence of the League Cup with a cruising home victory.

GOAL! Liverpool 5-1 West Ham (Gakpo)

It’s squirmed in from Gakpo and I am not sure if it takes a deflection en route to goal. It did! Just seeing the replay as I type and it’s wrong-footed Fabianski but Gakpo will take it.

GOAL! Liverpool 4-1 West Ham (Gakpo)

Cody Gakpo has deserved that! He cut inside from the left, shuffles across the box and smashes one low past Fabianski. Game well and truly over.

Subs

Robertson and Morton come on. Endo and Tsimikas make way.

Alvarez sent off.

Alvarez gets a second yellow for a poor challenge on Mo Salah.

GOAL! Liverpool 3-1 West Ham (Salah)

It’s wonderful from Salah to release Bradley, whose low cross is met by Mac Allister but it’s saved by Fabianski. Salah follows it up and sticks it into the roof of the net.

Booked

Lopetegui is booked for protesting that West Ham should have had a penalty.

West Ham want a pen

West Ham United are screaming for a penalty. Tsimikas blocked a cross down the far side. Boos from the away end as it

Great save from Kelleher

Kelleher does well to get down and smother Killman’s effort from close range. That looked certain to be an equaliser for the Hammers

Subs

Here comes Mohamed Salah for Federico Chiesa. Alexis Mac Allister on for Diogo Jota.

Jota at the double

Lovely stuff from Curtis Jones to begin the move and he eventually threads it to Jota, who makes no mistake for his third goal of the season. Liverpool 2-1 West Ham.

Goal! Liverpool 2-1 West Ham (Jota)

Jota 2-1! He finishes with ease after an eye-of-the-needle pass from Jones.

Underway

Diogo Jota gets the second half underway.

Second half underway

Liverpool attacking the Kop.

Liverpool back out for the second half. No changes.

Ratings

Caoimhin Kelleher – 6

Could do little about West Ham’s goal. Didn’t have a whole lot else to do. Saved one fizzing Bowen effort at his near post from an acute angle. Always confident on the ball.

Conor Bradley – 6

Was unfortunate to see his team score after he jumped in the way to deny what looked to be a certain goal seconds before Endo kicked it at Quansah inside the six-yard box. A good outlet on that right side.

Jarell Quansah – 6

Always calm and measured on the ball. One block to deny Ings with his chest drew the Anfield applause. Couldn’t do much about the own goal, was kicked at him by Endo from all of two yards. Rough luck.

Joe Gomez – 6

Largely untroubled in his first significant outing of the season. Will be pleased to be starting in his preferred position at centre-back.

Kostas Tsimikas – 5

Set-pieces and crosses are always a threat but Bowen enjoyed a good half on West Ham’s right side. Needs a bit more protection at times.

Curtis Jones – 6

Always wanted the ball and was constantly showing for it. Not played loads of minutes in this deeper position and remains a work in progress but not a bad half.

Wataru Endo – 5

Showcased a steel that is perhaps absent from Liverpool’s midfield when he doesn’t play. Won a fair few duels in that first period but not always the most progressive in his passing. His attempt at a clearance for West Ham’s goal was pure panic as it struck Quansah and went in.

Federico Chiesa – 6

Unclean volley means he claims an Anfield assist on his full debut for Jota. Looks very willing and very quick. Still rusty but that is to be expected having barely had a pre-season.

Cody Gakpo – 7

Continued where he left off in Milan and gave Coufal the runaround. His cross to Chiesa helped force the equaliser. Left-footed shot fizzed past Fabianski’s post via a deflection. Looks sharp, needs to get on the ball more.

Diogo Jota – 7

Equaliser was a poacher supreme in action. Sensed the chance and rose highest inside the six-yard box to nod home. Superb stuff. Was otherwise quiet, but that is typical Jota.

Darwin Nunez – 6

Not too many chances for the striker to test the goalkeeper but did his fair share of work to win the ball back in a number
