Liverpool remains a transfer holdout, retaining its status as one of just two Premier League clubs still keeping its powder dry this summer. But with the window nearing its final month, there could be activity before too long, with defense looking like a likely area for business.

An inquiry has reportedly gone in for Bayer Leverkusen center-back Odilon Kossounou, who impressed under Xabi Alonso last season amid the unbeaten Bundesliga-winning campaign. But Liverpool will have other options to consider, amid news that Sporting CP has dropped the asking price for Goncalo Inacio quite significantly

All this comes amid murmurings over the future of Virgil van Dijk, who is into the final year of his deal at the club. Arne Slot and Richard Hughes will no doubt need to sit down with the club captain when he returns from his post-Euros break.

Meanwhile, there are transfer stories away from the defense too. Interest in Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley appears to be heating up, although not exclusively from Merseyside.

Liverpool and Aston Villa are both keen to seal a summer deal for 19-year-old Juventus center-back Dean Huijsen, according to Football Insider.

Huijsen is said to be viewed as a real talent for the future after he impressed on loan with AS Roma last season. A Spanish youth international, he is valued at around $33m (£26m/€30m)

Liverpool told to pay $33m for goalkeeper

If Caoimhin Kelleher leaves Liverpool this summer, a replacement will need to be found for the Irishman. Ideally, of course, the goalkeeper would just stay put under Arne Slot.

Nevertheless, the Reds are being linked with alternative options just in case. In Spain, MARCA claims that Real Madrid shot-stopper Andriy Lunin is on Liverpool’s radar — and his agent Jorge Mendes has told interested parties that Los Blancos want $33m (£26m/€30m) to sell his client this summer.

This is backed up by today’s edition of another Spanish outlet, SPORT. They also believe that the Reds could be in for the 25-year-old Ukrainian

Wayne Rooney wants Liverpool ace

Former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney hasn’t been particularly successful so far in his managerial career. Even so, he is now in charge of Plymouth Argyle.

Ahead of next season, Rooney has supposedly identified Liverpool youngster Jayden Danns as a potential addition, according to TEAMtalk. Rooney is said to be a big fan of the 18-year-old, who might benefit from regular experience of senior soccer

Mohamed Simakan to Liverpool transfer claim

Speaking to The Redmen TV, Sport BILD reporter Tobi Altschaffl has suggested that Liverpool could sign 24-year-old center-back Mohamed Simakan from RB Leipzig this summer.

“Liverpool have expressed an interest in him,” Altschaffl stated, emphasizing that the defender’s release clause is around the 70 million euro mark. However, he also mentioned: “I think Leipzig would sell him for about 40 million euros.

“I don’t know if he’s already on the level to play for a club like Liverpool, but if they see something in him. It could be a chance.

Stefan Bajcetic attracting transfer interest

Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic is attracting plenty of interest this summer, according to The Athletic, but he has no interest in going out on loan after returning from injury.

Instead, the Reds expect to have him available immediately when the new season begins under Arne Slot. He has been slowly rebuilding himself after spending most of the 2023/24 campaign on the sidelines.

While Liverpool will have to be careful with the Spanish teenager, he is a huge talent. If he gets back to where he was before his long-term issue, he could be the ideal number six solution as the new-look Reds team comes together.

Goncalo Inacio is Liverpool transfer “priority”

According to the Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha, Goncalo Inacio has emerged as Liverpool’s transfer “priority” this summer, with the Sporting CP defender now available for a cut-price $49m (£38m/€45m).

Liverpool was linked extensively with a move for Inacio last summer but never ended up making a move. A year on, the 22-year-old remains highly rated

Anthony Gordon advised against Liverpool move

Former Everton and Manchester United striker Louis Saha has advised Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon to reject any interest from Liverpool this summer and stay at St James’ Park.

“I’m not surprised that there’s interest in him because he’s been showing the signs of a player that wants to develop as quickly as possible,” Saha says.

“I don’t think it’s a good time for him to move however, because it’s not a good thing to move around different clubs frequently and he’s only been at St James’ Park for 18 months. I would advise him to remain at Newcastle this summer.”

Mohammed Kudus hint?

West Ham United forward Mohammed Kudus has changed agents, which is usually a sign that a transfer move is on the cards. His release clause isn’t believed to come into play until 2025 but he has been linked with Liverpool.

Next year, he will be available for a fixed fee of $109m (£85m/€100m). Given that Lucas Paqueta looks set to stay at the London Stadium this summer, though, it hasn’t been 100 per cent ruled out that Kudus could move in this window.

Dani Olmo transfer latest

Barcelona has submitted a proposal for RB Leipzig and Spain attacking midfielder Dani Olmo but Liverpool remains interested in the 26-year-old, according to AS.

Manchester City and Manchester United are both said to be exploring a move as well. While Olmo’s release clause has expired, Leipzig is open to a sale at the right price

Takefusa Kubo transfer latest

The Japanese outlet Sponichi Annex claimed over the weekend that Liverpool was “preparing” an offer of around $71m (£55m/€65m) for the Real Sociedad winger Takefusa Kubo. The Reds are supposedly willing to offer an eye-watering salary to get a deal over the line.

The report claims that a salary of around $310k (£240k/€285k) has been placed on the table, though that seems a little far-fetched. That would mean Kubo earning more than everyone at Liverpool aside from Mohamed Salah, which would be a strange move.

Premier League club “makes offer” for Dean Huijsen

According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, an unnamed Premier League club has made a bid for 19-year-old Juventus center-back Dean Huijsen, who is valued at around $33m (£26m/€30m).

Huijsen has been linked with a move to Liverpool before and the Reds could do with a defender coming in this summer. They and Newcastle supposedly made inquiries earlier this month.

Goncalo Inacio price drops

Goncalo Inacio could reportedly be available for less than expected this summer. Sporting increased his release clause last year, but will now listen to offers closer to the original figure.

According to TEAMtalk, citing Portuguese reports, Sporting could accept somewhere in the region of $49m (£38m/€45m) for Inacio. It remains to be seen whether that will be enough to tempt Liverpool into a deal.

Inacio has primarily played in a back three, which could deter Arne Slot. But he is a left-footer, an increasingly valuable commodity among center-backs.

Goncalo Inacio is one option for Liverpool

Atalanta is up to its third bid in its efforts to sign Matt O’Riley from Celtic. This package is worth up to $20m (£15m/€18m) but Celtic is still holding out for more, per Fabrizio Romano. However, the two parties are very much engaged in negotiations with an eye to making a deal happen.

That comes after Liverpool was credited with an interest in O’Riley. The 23-year-old scored an impressive 18 league goals from his midfield base last season, and has been on the club’s transfer radar for some time.

Liverpool makes Odilon Kossounou ‘inquiry’

Liverpool has asked Bayer Leverkusen about a potential move for Odilon Kossounou. That’s per Caught Offside.

It has inquired as to whether a deal can be done ahead of the new season. And Xabi Alonso has replied that a move is possible, with Kossounou himself thought to be ready to leave.

To seal a deal, Liverpool would need to pay up to $49m (£38m/€45m). That doesn’t look a terrible price for a 23-year-old who played his part in an incredible unbeaten season.
