LIVERPOOL TRANSFER NEWS LIVE : 14 players leave Anfield but defender including senior players Before Deadline day full list 👇
Arne Slot continues to wait for his first new signing as Liverpool manager, but the make-up of his squad has become clearer after a number of departures were confirmed
Matip among 10 to leave
Liverpool have confirmed the departure of 10 players, including senior stars Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara. Centre-back Matip and midfielder Thiago had their exits announced earlier in the year, with their contracts expiring at the end of June, but the news is now official.
The others to leave include Adam Lewis, Melkamu Frauendorf and Mateusz Musialowski, all of whom featured under Jurgen Klopp after playing for Liverpool’s academy sides. German youth international Frauendorf already has a new club, with the 20-year-old joining Hannover in his homeland
Liverpool’s list of 10 departures is rounded out by five more academy talents. Nathan Giblin, Francis Gyimah, Luke Hewitson, Niall Osborne and Cody Pennington are the others to depart.
Reds enter Ugarte race
Liverpool could rival Manchester United for Manuel Ugarte, according to the player’s agent. The Uruguay international only joined Paris Saint-Germain from Sporting CP last summer but could find himself on the move again.
Van den Berg deal delayed
Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel has explained the delay in getting a deal over the line for Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg. The Dutch youngster impressed on loan at the Bundesliga side last term, and they remain keen on a permanent switch.
“We’re waiting. We’ve been in contact with Liverpool several times,” Heidel told Fussball Transfers when reflecting on the future of the 22-year-old.
Here are eight Liverpool players who could leave the club in 2024. It’s going to be a summer of change at Anfield.
Liverpool were already likely to lose some players in 2024 and the chances of that increased dramatically with news that Jurgen Klopp will depart at the end of the season. Suddenly, players aren’t quite as sure where they’ll stand going forward.
A series of contracts are coming up in the next 18 months, forcing Liverpool into negotiations – or releases. Big decisions are on the way for both players and clubs, then.
So with that in mind, here are eight players who could realistically leave the club in 2024.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Let’s get this one out of the way.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has a contract expiring in 2025, meaning he is under 12 months away from being able to sign a pre-contract with someone else. If Liverpool can’t get him to sign a new one, they’ll pretty much have to sell this summer in order to generate some cash from him.
Now, there’s little to no expectation that Alexander-Arnold plans on leaving. As Jamie Carragher points out, though, this is the biggest ‘worry’ at the club right now.
Virgil van Dijk
Like Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk has under 18 months left on his contract. This summer is essentially the final time Liverpool can cash-in on him, given any new contract will likely take him to the end of his career.
Van Dijk is now 32 and needs to decide what he wants. This upcoming contract will be the final major deal for him, and if he wants to play for anyone else while still near his peak, he’ll have to leave this summer.
Klopp’s exit gives him a reason to do so. While there’s few rumours of a move, it’s one to watch this summer.
Mohamed Salah
You can largely echo the above points for Mohamed Salah, too. 32 (or will be in June), under 18 months to go, final major contract.
The difference is that Liverpool know they can secure a massive fee for Salah this summer. They received a record one from Saudi Arabia in 2023 and while it might not reach these heights in 2024, there will still be plenty of cash on the table.
The Reds must decide whether it’s more important to have more years of Salah or the money he could bring in with a year left on his deal. This one could develop into one of the stories of the summer.
Thiago
Unlike everyone else mentioned, Thiago’s contract expires this summer. He’s free to talk to non-English clubs right now, in fact, and can leave for free if he wants.
This one is very difficult to predict. The Spaniard hasn’t played at all this season, only returning to training within the last week or so. Without games under his belt – and a prolonged period of fitness – no one can gauge his value.
Thiago will certainly have outside offers this summer but Liverpool could certainly tempt him to stick around if he performs over the coming months. Will he want to renew under the uncertainty of a new manager, though? It’s once again the final major contract of his career and not a decision he’ll take lightly.
Joel Matip
Jurgen Klopp leaving almost certainly signals the end of Joel Matip’s career with Liverpool. No new manager will share the same sentimentality for the player – and that’s the main reason to renew his deal.
Matip won’t play again this season and his contract expires in the summer. Even if he were to renew, he’d be behind Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah in the pecking order as he recovers from injury.
At 32 (and 33 in August), it’s unlikely he’d ever move past them again. Now, Matip could get a new deal if Van Dijk decides to move on – but fans should probably prepare for a difficult goodbye
Caoimhin Kelleher
No one would be shocked to see Caoimhin Kelleher request a transfer this summer. It’s honestly a surprise he didn’t do it last summer.
Kelleher is now 25 and still a distant no.2 behind Alisson Becker. He only really features in the Carabao Cup and Europa League – and Liverpool likely won’t be in the latter competition next season.
Nottingham Forest put in a bid last month but Liverpool rejected it, wanting the Irishman around for the rest of the season. A £20m offer in the summer, however, will almost certainly be accepted.
Adrian
Adrian is essentially just signing a series of one-year contracts at this point, so like the last few years, this could be the summer he departs. It could also be the summer he signs another one-year deal.
The Spaniard is third choice and never plays, but he’s also wanted around the squad. We’ll see.
Nat Phillips
Surely, this is the transfer window that sees Nat Phillips leave. The defender has been linked with a move away for the last three years now but Liverpool have always priced him too high or decided at the last minute that they’d rather keep him.
His contract expires in 2025, though, so this really is the final chance to receive any money for Phillips. If an offer comes in, it’s getting accepted.
