Liverpool confirm major Mohamed Salah decision ahead of Arsenal clash

Liverpool have confirmed Mohamed Salah will be unavailable for selection for the FA Cup clash with Arsenal next month. The Gunners welcome Jurgen Klopp’s men to the Emirates Stadium in the third round on Sunday, January 7.

The fixture will be the north Londoners’ second game of the New Year, with the cup draw providing Mikel Arteta’s side a difficult opening game of the domestic cup.

However, as has every club around the Premier League, the timing of the African Cup of Nations means many players will be unavailable throughout January. For Arsenal, Thomas Partey is in contention to feature for Ghana while Mohamed Elneny is likely to join the Egypt squad.

Fortunately for the Gunners, Liverpool will be without one of their best players in Salah. The forward, who has scored 16 goals in 26 appearances in all competitions this season, will look to help Egypt win their first AFCON title since 2010.

In a statement released on Friday morning, Liverpool confirmed his absence for the visit to north London. The statement read: “Mohamed Salah will link up with Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations following Liverpool’s clash with Newcastle United.

“The Reds play their first game of 2024 when they host the Magpies at Anfield on Monday night. Salah is available to feature in that fixture, before he joins up with his nation for the latest edition of AFCON, to be held in the Ivory Coast.
