Liverpool are next up against Bologna in the Champions League with Arne Slot facing some selection posers

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot looks on during the Premier League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers on September

Liverpool ensured a seventh win in eight games under Arne Slot with a hard-earned 2-1 Premier League triumph at Wolves on Saturday. A penalty from Mohamed Salah proved the winner after Ibrahima Konate had seen his first-half opener equalised by Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Liverpool will now turn their attention to the Champions League when they entertain Serie A side Bologna at Anfield on Wednesday having opened the new-look league stage with a 3-1 win at AC Milan.

With the schedule having intensified over the past fortnight, so too has Slot’s reliance on his squad. And it’s likely there will be further rotation for the visit of Bologna.

Alisson Becker returned from injury against Wolves after missing the previous two games, and will be expected to keep his place between the sticks ahead of Caoimhin Kelleher and Vitezslav Jaros.

Slot is confident that Andy Robertson will overcome the knock that forced him off late on at Wolves, although Kostas Tsimikas – who started the last two midweek games – is on standby at left-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold remains ahead of Conor Bradley at right-back.

The League Cup game against West Ham United aside, central defence has largely been settled with skipper Virgil van Dijk joined by Konate. Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez are the other options.

Jones in?

Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister remain in good form and appear to have locked down the two defensive midfield positions.

Curtis Jones, though, has impressed in his two outings over the last week and could be pushing hard for a starting role.

That could come at the expense of Dominik Szoboszlai, who was out of sorts against Wolves. Wataru Endo is another possibility in one of the two deeper roles should Slot look to rest players.

Harvey Elliott remains sidelined with a fractured foot while Tyler Morton made his first senior Liverpool outing in more than two years last Wednesday in between two scoring appearances for the under-21s.

Gakpo question

Darwin Nunez missed out altogether through illness at the weekend and saw Diogo Jota stake his claim down the central of the attack with a hand in both goals.

Cody Gakpo started in Milan and could do likewise after a good showing against West Ham last midweek with Luis Diaz appearing a little jaded at times against Wolves.

Despite netting the winner, Salah wasn’t at his best on Saturday and could come under pressure on the right from Federico Chiesa, who would benefit from further minutes.
