LIV 1-0 CHE: Poor VAR And Referee Decision Made Against Chelsea

In the highly anticipated clash between Liverpool and Chelsea at Anfield, the first half witnessed a controversial moment that left Chelsea and their supporters aggrieved. A pivotal incident unfolded when Chelsea’s midfielder Conor Gallagher was brought down in the penalty area by Virgil van Dijk, only for the referee to wave away Chelsea’s appeals for a penalty.

The decision, or lack thereof, by the match official has sparked widespread debate and condemnation. Van Dijk’s challenge on Gallagher was undeniably forceful, as he appeared to hold Gallagher down, impeding his progress into the box. The incident, occurring within the penalty area, warranted serious consideration from the referee, especially given its potential impact on the course of the game.

However, much to Chelsea’s dismay, the referee deemed the challenge unworthy of a penalty, opting to allow play to continue without intervention. This decision left Chelsea players and fans alike incredulous, feeling unjustly denied of a clear-cut opportunity to break the deadlock.

Compounding the frustration was the apparent failure of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system to adequately review the incident. Despite its intended purpose of rectifying clear and obvious errors on the field, VAR remained conspicuously inactive, failing to provide the necessary scrutiny and intervention to address the contentious challenge on Gallagher.

The lack of VAR intervention in such a critical moment raises serious questions about the efficacy and consistency of officiating standards in top-flight football. In a fixture of this magnitude, where margins for error are razor-thin and every decision holds significant ramifications, the absence of VAR’s intervention feels particularly egregious

Liverpool news as the Reds deemed fortunate to get away with early Chelsea penalty shout before Diogo Jota scores opener

Joe Cole thinks that Liverpool were lucky not to be punished for a first-half tackle on Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

The Reds dominated the opening period at Anfield on Wednesday night and peppered Djordje Petrovic’s goal with shots but could easily have given away a spot kick before taking the lead.

On a rare Chelsea break the ball fell to Gallagher inside the Liverpool penalty area only for the move to be stopped when Van Dijk stepped in.

Gallagher was sent tumbling under the challenge on the edge of the six-yard box only to see referee Paul Tierney totally unmoved as play was waved on.

VAR reviewed the decision but saw nothing wrong with the on-field call.

Speaking on commentary, Ally McCoist felt that Jurgen Klopp’s side were fortunate to get away with the incident. Cole went one step further.
