Liverpool appear to be closing in on making their first new signing of the summer transfer window, with boss Arne Slot set to solve a problem that has caused him trouble all pre-season

Liverpool finally appear to be ready to make their first signing of the summer after returning from a tour of the United States.

New boss Arne Slot is yet to see any fresh faces arrive at Anfield since he replaced Jurgen Klopp earlier this summer. While they enjoyed an unbeaten tour, there is an acceptance that new players are needed.

The priority position for the Reds’ transfer chiefs appears to be in midfield, with reports suggesting they are closing in on signing a specialist No.6 from outside the Premier League.

A number of players who fit that description have been linked with a move to Merseyside. Here, Mirror Football looks at six players who could become Slot’s first signing as Liverpool manager.

Manuel Ugarte

The Uruguayan only joined PSG last summer but already looks set to leave the Parc des Princes. He fell out of favour under Luis Enrique as the season progressed, though did still help PSG win a domestic treble.

Manchester United were heavily linked with making a move for the 23-year-old. But the Red Devils now appear to have abandoned their pursuit, likely signalling a rival team has moved ahead of them.

Ugarte already has 22 caps for Uruguay and is seen as being a combative defensive midfielder, topping the Ligue 1 charts for most tackles made last term, despite only appearing 25 times
