Liverpool were hit by two new injury concerns prior to their win over Brentford as Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez were absent.

In the build-up to the visit of Thomas Frank’s in-form side, Liverpool were sweating on the fitness of captain Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch, who had missed the midweek Europa League defeat to Toulouse through illness and injury respectively.

While the rest did Van Dijk the world of good as he produced another impressive display at the back in the 3-0 win over Brentford, Gravenberch was sidelined. And with Alexis Mac Allister suspended through a one-match ban, and Curtis Jones, Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic all injured, that left Reds boss Jurgen Klopp short of midfield options. So much so that he had to name highly-rated 16-year-old Trey Nyoni on the bench for the first time since his move from Leicester City in the summer.

But Klopp was also hit by problems in defence as Konate and Gomez joined Andy Robertson on the sidelines. The injury to Konate has meant he has been omitted from Didier Deschamps’ France squad for this month’s fixtures against Gibraltar and Greece and subsequently replaced by Chelsea defender Axel Disasi.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes it was the correct decision not to send off Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo.

There is no official word on the diagnosis surrounding Konate and Gomez. But while Mac Allister will return for the top-of-the-table match against Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday, November 25, Klopp has a number of fitness worries.

Ibrahima Konate

While the injury to Konate is currently unknown, the problem is severe enough for him to sit out of the upcoming internationals for France.

The 24-year-old returned from the October international break with an issue that saw miss Liverpool’s win over Everton. Klopp, who has been outspoken in his discontent toward fixture congestion and player welfare, aimed a dig at Les Bleus boss Deschamps last month. He said: “He (Konate) did not start tonight. He’s not even in the squad.

“I love absolutely everything about Ibou, but the problem is that Ibou has injury problems from time to time, and Monsieur Deschamps played him 90 and 87 minutes in the two games so we’ve used this time now to give him a little rest. He could have played tonight of course but he has to play on Sunday again.

“I told Ibou, tell Monsieur Deschamps, that’s how you rest a player. Not just three minutes. But we are more than happy with Ibou. [He’s a] fantastic boy and a super player and France can be really happy to have him.”

RMC Sport reporter Fabrice Hawkins stated a hamstring problem was the reason Konate sat it out against Brentford. In a tweet, he said: “Victim of a small muscle injury to the left hamstring with Liverpool in the Europa League on Thursday in Toulouse during the warm-up, Ibrahima Konaté was unable to play this weekend with Liverpool. His injury requires approximately two weeks of treatment.”

Joe Gomez

Gomez’s absence was a surprising and disappointing one given the England international has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign.

The 26-year-old’s form suffered last season, as the Reds missed out on a place in the Champions League. However, so far he has shown versatility and defensive stability, which has been crucial in the team’s early season form.

Ryan Gravenberch
Klopp had previously hinted there was a chance that Gravenberch could feature against Brentford but said he would be available for selection after the international break.

“Ryan got a little niggle in the knee, nothing major,” the Liverpool manager said on Wednesday. “He was running today (Wednesday), we hope there’s a chance for Brentford and he will definitely be back after the international break but that doesn’t help now for today. That’s why he’s not here (Toulouse).

Curtis Jones
Jones suffered a “low grade” hamstring injury during Liverpool’s Carabao Cup win over AFC Bournemouth and has missed the Reds’ last three but is expected to return for the trip to Manchester City.

“Curtis had a hamstring (issue) not massive. After the international break, he will be back but before not. It’s a low, low-grade hamstring,” said Klopp.

“He was in good shape, red card, lack of rhythm, got the games and then, he felt a little bit. I took him off against Bournemouth, he didn’t feel anything there then in the dressing room he was lying there and felt something. We had a scan, very low-grade but kept him out.”

Andy Robertson
Another absentee is Robertson. The Scotland captain has been out of action after suffering a dislocated shoulder during the Tartan Army’s defeat to Spain in October.

Robertson underwent surgery on the injury and is expected to return in the new year.

Thiago Alcantara
Thiago remains out of action following a setback in his recovery from pelvis surgery.
