Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has already shared his thoughts on a possible move for Kylian Mbappe.

The France captain has entered the last six months of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain and has perennially been linked with a move away from the Ligue 1 champions. Real Madrid has often been touted as Mbappe’s next destination, while Liverpool have also been consistently linked with an interest in the 25-year-old.

It took little time for those familiar headlines to appear at the start of the January transfer window, with Le Parisien recently caliming that Liverpool ‘dream’ of signing Mbappe, though the finances involved would make a deal unlikely.

PSG boss Luis Enrique gave a coy response when asked how he would manage the growing speculation around Mbappe’s future: “As I always have done up to this point,” Enrique explained. “It isn’t an issue that depends on me. I am not the one to respond to this question.”

Liverpool’s biggest game-changer this season doesn’t even play

The Reds – like most of Europe’s elite clubs – have held a long-standing interest in Mbappe, stemming back to his time with Monaco. However, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted in the summer that he would be surprised if the club were able to get a deal for Mbappe over the line.

“We laugh about it,” Klopp told Sky Germany, back in August. “I can say that I think he’s a really good player but the financial conditions don’t suit us at all. I wouldn’t like to ruin the story now… but as far as I know, there’s nothing to it.

“It’s possible that someone else from the club is preparing something and wants to surprise me… that hasn’t happened in the eight years that I’ve been here. That would be the first time.”

It appears that something would drastically have to change for Liverpool to make a serious move for Mbappe, even if he is available as a free agent. For the moment, it remains a case of what could have been as the World Cup winner has already revealed that he had talks over a possible move to the Reds, prior to joining PSG.

“I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool,” Mbappe admitted, back in 2022, . “I don’t know why, you will have to ask her! It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club.”
