Xabi Alonso is on the radar of both Liverpool and Barcelona

Liverpool’s chances of landing Xabi Alonso in the summer have been given a boost after it emerged Barcelona have their sights set on Thomas Tuchel.

Alonso, 42, has quickly emerged as the overwhelming favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp after the German announced he would be standing down from his role at the end of the season a few weeks ago.

But Liverpool are unlikely to be the Spaniard’s only suitors in the wake of the impressive work he has overseen at Bayer Leverkusen. The Bundesliga outfit are unbeaten in 30 matches so far this term and on track to win their first ever German title under Alonso’s stewardship.

Alonso has also been touted for the top job at the Nou Camp after Xavi Hernandez confirmed his intentions to stand down, however, the Spanish champions are now considering making Tuchel their next head coach, according to Sport.

Tuchel is under pressure in Munich despite guiding Bayern to the Bundesliga title last after replacing Julian Nagelsmann last March. The reigning German champions are currently five points behind Alonso’s side in the league standings.

But it’s Tuchel’s pedigree in the Champions League that has swung the pendulum in his favour, with Barcelona keen to appoint a coach who has won Europe’s elite competition.

Barcelona sporting director Deco recently admitted that the club is in need of “radical change” after Xavi announced his intention to quit the club back at the end of January.
