LIFT OFF AT OLD
EPL NEWS
Full-time Man Utd 4-3 Liverpool
In the end, those misses were punished. Antony, on as a second-half substitute, turned and put the ball beyond Caoimhín Kelleher’s outstretched arm and into the corner. Manchester United, from nowhere, had been allowed back into the game.
Harvey Elliott, however, stepped up near the end of the first period of extra-time. His shot found the back of the net after a heavy deflection off Christian Eriksen and the 9000 or so traveling fans were certainly enjoyed their trip. That was until Marcus Rashford made it 3-3. Afforded too much space, having missed a sitter earlier in the game, he was clinical here.
But Liverpool could not even hold on for penalties in the end. Leaving Conor Bradley back on his own to defend against two players, Amad popped up with the winner in the second half of the extra 30 minutes.
WINNERS
Kelleher did pretty much everything he could with the efforts that Manchester United attempted on his goal and Jarell Quansah was excellent in front of him as well, relative to his age. Not everything came off for Liverpool in the final third but the spaces were there to do a lot more damage. It is hard to say whether the gaps that Manchester United exploited stemmed from a leaky defense or an open midfield.
LOSERS
Manchester United started well but once Liverpool went ahead, did little in the way of sustaining any pressure. The lack of pressing and urgency from Ten Hag’s side made things easy for the visitor for large periods but they still won. As for Liverpool, few stood out in either a positive or a negative sense. More was required at both ends, ultimately. Those in the attack could have done more and there were too many gaps in the defense.
PLAYER RATINGS
Caoimhín Kelleher — 8
Made a couple of superb saves when Manchester United could have gone more than one goal in front in the first half. Did everything he could to deny Alejandro Garnacho but could not stop McTominay from poking in from home range, Antony leveling or the extra-time goals.
Joe Gomez — 7
Marcus Rashford had a lot of space to run into down the left-hand side of Manchester United early in the game but Gomez grew into it. A couple of shots flew over the bar and he looked no closer to breaking his duck. Dependable defensively on both sides but nothing spectacular.
Jarell Quansah — 7
Did his best impression of Joël Matip with a dribble forward into the acres of space that Manchester United was leaving in midfield on at least one occasion, and it led to a goal. Confident, composed and strong.
Virgil van Dijk — 8
The defensive openings that Liverpool left for Manchester United mainly came down the other side and he just about managed to hold things together when the Reds were under the cosh. He could not do much about Rashford being left into much space.
Andy Robertson — 7
The left-back did a decent enough job defensively against Garnacho but didn’t offer loads in an attacking sense other than smashing a shot well over the top when he should have been testing André Onana.

Dominik Szoboszlai — 6
Quiet, really. Didn’t have loads of impact in the final third, much like many of his teammates. The Hungarian looked disappointed to be coming off in the second half but couldn’t really have too many complaints.
Wataru Endō — 6
Got bypassed in the center far too often for Liverpool when Manchester United was in the ascendency but then thought he had leveled the scoring in the first 45 minutes, only for the offside flag to be up. Good on the ball but got turned a few too many times.
Alexis Mac Allister — 8
Similar to Szoboszlai until the point that he scored. He looked a little off the pace, but then found a crucial equalizing goal. The Argentine is always good in possession and helped Liverpool improve in between Manchester United’s strong start and finish.
Mohamed Salah — 7
Even quieter than Mac Allister until he found the back of the net. From that position, he was never going to miss. Didn’t manage to last the game after coming back from injury.
Darwin Núñez — 7
Lacking the chaos that makes him such a threat for large periods of the match. The Uruguayan misplaced a couple of passes and didn’t quite get a couple of his touches right but did come away with an assist. He caused enough problems but was also, like his teammates, guilty of lacking a clinical edge.
Luis Díaz — 6
Looks electric when he has the ball but didn’t manage to beat his man many times. That is the frustration with him sometimes: he clearly has the pace and the trickery to dribble past someone, but didn’t quite manage it here.
SUBSTITUTES
Cody Gakpo — 5
Missed one big chance to set up a third Liverpool goal when the Reds were already a goal up. Just didn’t quite adjust to the pace of the match and never looked particularly intense. He wanted far too much time on numerous occasions.
Conor Bradley — 6
Defended well and got his body in the way a couple of times when he needed to. This was a hard game to come into and he just about managed to do so. The winning goal was not his fault.
Harvey Elliott — 7

It felt like Liverpool needed his poise in the final third but he wasn’t quite able to find it in normal time. He was as guilty as his teammates when it came to missing opportunities to put the game to bed. In extra-time, though, it was Elliott’s shot (albeit deflected) that put his side back ahead again.
Kostas Tsimikas — 6
Offered a bit of renewed energy for Liverpool but little else. Dealt with Antony on the couple of times that he threatened during extra-time.
GOAL! Man Utd 2-3 Liverpool (Elliott, 105)
THE SUPER SUB DELIVERS AGAIN!
Bradley finds him on the edge of the box. He lashes at goal but it’s a big deflection off Eriksen which does for Onana.
It takes the ball whizzing into the bottom corner and the wrong-footed goalkeeper can’t recover.
Liverpool don’t care about that. Elliott runs off to celebrate with a delighted Klopp!
GOAL! Man Utd 1-2 Liverpool (Salah, 45+3)
HE JUST LOVES PLAYING AGAINST MAN UTD!
Nunez’s shot is saved with one hand by Onana. It’s an athletic stop but the rebound comes straight to the one man on the pitch United wouldn’t want it to come to.
There are claims for a foul on Fernandes by Gomez in the build-up… And was Nunez offside earlier in the move?
VAR are busy…
GOAL! Man Utd 1-1 Liverpool (Mac Allister, 44)
MAC ALLISTER LEVELS IT UP!
Quansah roams forwards and into the United box. He finds Nunez who pops it back where it came from for Mac Allister.
There’s a deflection on the shot which does for Onana at his near post and we’re all square in this FA Cup cracker!
Klopp pumps his fist. Ten Hag looks glum. What a shake up to the mood of this match!
GOAL! Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool (McTominay, 10)
Man Utd 0-0 Liverpool
9: ALMOST A STUNNING GOAL FROM LIVERPOOL!
Wow! Klopp applauds in appreciation after Nunez arrows the ball across the pitch and into the box for Salah to connect with a left-foot volley across goal… but it just flies past Onana’s left-hand post.
