Gabriel Martinelli of Arsenal and Jeremy Doku of Manchester are arguably among the best left-wingers in 2023/24 UEFA Champions League (UCL). Interestingly, they are the only Premier League players that have completed double-digit take-ons in the European first tier competition this season. How do these wingers compare with each other in the ongoing UCL?

Gabriel Martinelli

To start with, they have got one goal each so far in the competition. For Martinelli, a Brazilian, his goal came from 2 attempts. This gives him 50% conversion rate. In the case of Doku, it is a 20% conversion rate (one goal in 5 attempts). In fact, the shots of the Arsenal star have combined Expected Goals (xG) of 1.4 going by Opta data while those of his Manchester City counterpart stand at 1.0. It can be inferred from these numbers that the Brazil international, who has played 2 games less, is more clinical in front of goal than his Belgium counterpart.

Jeremy Doku

Meanwhile, Doku has completed more passes than Martinelli so far in the tournament. However, the latter has created more chances (6) than the former (4). When one looks at the number of crosses attempted, the Arsenal winger is again on top with 14 which is 9 more than that of his Citizens’ counterpart. In terms of dribbling, the Belgian is far ahead having completed 17 take-ons in the competition. This makes him the best dribbler currently. Gabriel has only completed 12 dribbles within the same period. A look at their duels shows that Doku has won more on the ground (24) than Martinelli. However, the former has not won any aerial contest but the matter has won 1.

To cap it all, we need to look at their contributions to defence. The Citizens’ star has won two tackles while his counterpart has won one. In contrast, the former has only blocked 3 passes while the latter has blocked 5 and made 2 interceptions so far in the ongoing UCL.
