CelticArne Engels Celtic value soars in double-quick time as record signing has bumper price set

Arne Engels arrived at Celtic from Augsburg in a blaze of publicity this summer after Brendan Rodgers made him the club’s record-ever signing.

 

The young Belgian was signed by Celtic for a club-record fee of £11.5m from Bundesliga side Augsburg, smashing the previous record set when Odsonne Edouard was purchased from PSG in 2018.

 

Since his arrival, Engels has made 14 appearances in the green and white Hoops scoring three goals and creating six with three of those assists coming in the Champions League.

 

The 21-year-old also scored his first Champions League goal for Celtic against Slovan Bratislava and since then, Engels has been developing nicely under Brendan Rodgers.

 

And now, a recent study by CIES Football Observatory has placed Engels’ value at almost double what it was when Celtic first signed him.

Engels has slotted well into Rodgers’ Celtic and after a couple of games where he seemed to lose his way, the Belgian has still produced the good.

 

So much so that CIES now has Engels valued between £14.1m and £19.9m using their ‘Fair Price’ tool. The value is worked out from the price that was paid for the player and taking into account inflation and who could potentially afford to but the player.

 

With Engels being in the high-tier pricing range (in relative terms) the Belgian is likely to attract attention from Europe’s top teams considering he is a full Belgium international.

 

Engels’ age and how much he still has to develop means that even at the high-end valuation, the Celtic midfielder would represent a bargain for any of Europe’s top teams should any want to secure his services in the future.

Chelsea were forced to come from a goal down as they secured a 2-1 victory at Celtic to maintain their perfect start in the Women’s Champions League.

 

Sonia Bompastor’s side, who travelled to Scotland without Millie Bright, Kadeisha Buchanan, Sjoeke Nusken and Mayra Ramirez, were made to work hard for their win, which sees them maintain their perfect start to the season with a ninth straight victory in all competitions this term.

 

In Celtic’s first real attack of the game, Murphy Agnew finished off a swift counter from the hosts as they took a shock 22nd-minute lead.

 

However, Chelsea, who are on a 12-match winning run in all competitions, were not behind for long.

 

The WSL champions – who face a crucial WSL clash against leaders Man City, live on Sky Sports on Saturday (Kick-off 5.30pm) – roared back with two goals in four first-half minutes.

 

Maika Hamano swept home Aggie Beever-Jones’ cut back for the equaliser (28), before Ashley Lawrence thumped home a rebound after goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty denied stand-in Chelsea captain Erin Cuthbert from close range.

The third goal never came for the Blues, who had Beever-Jones sent off in stoppage-time after two bookable offences, but they held on for a third straight win in the Women’s Champions League to sit top of Group B with nine points.

 

Meanwhile, it was a spirited showing from Celtic but the remain rooted to the bottom of the group as they await their first point in the competition.

Bompastor not happy with performance

 

Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor:

 

“I knew it would be a tough game for us, especially because of the Celtic mentality. They showed a lot of heart and they played with a lot of energy. We were expecting that they were going to be really motivated.

 

“Also, as a manager, I decided to rotate my squad, so sometimes it can happen that the players don’t get the same chemistry together. But I wanted to have a better impression from my team. I’m really happy with the three points and the victory, but not really happy with the performance. We were not efficient enough tonight.

 

“Every game is always an opportunity to learn. Tonight I learned a lot and I will share that with my players as a team, but also as individuals.

 

“There are some positives. With our squad, we are still able to rotate players and rest some. We have the three points and the victory, so we stay in the good dynamic for that, but in terms of the performance, we needed to do a better job in different aspects.

 

“As a manager, I always have different plans for the game and the three substitutions were planned. That’s the positive. We are just now moving on and going into the Manchester City game exactly with the plans we wanted to have.”

 

‘We didn’t panic’

“It’s a positive thing. We didn’t really get stressed about the situation. We were confident enough to stay in the game, play and score the two goals.

 

“I think we could have scored a lot more. We were not efficient tonight, but at least we didn’t concede more than one.”

“I think that they probably believe it more now because what we showed tonight is a really good effort and really good performance. Now the girls know what they can do.”

The opening of the first half is dominated by Chelsea, with most of the action on the left wing. The Blues are pressing the Celtic box, with some first attempts from Wieke Kaptein and Jean-Francois. Ashworth-Clifford gets to the ball first, but Perisset is right behind her, forcing the Celtic player to shoot early. Ashworth-Clifford effort was right at Mušović, who makes the stop.

 

 

After the break Bompastor made some changes: Baltimore, Lawrence and Cuthbert made way for Bronze, Rytting Kaneryd and Reiten. It seemed that the head coach was not to sure on her Starting IX being able to do the job. Celtic proved to be a tough opponent that capitalised on every small mistake in the back.

 

The second half continued like the first half ended: Chelsea on top. Kelly Clark kept her team in the game when clearing an effort off the line. Björn tried for long distance, but her effort was blocked and Guro Reiten’s shot went wide.

 

Substitutions for both coaches

 

Chelsea reinforced their team with fresh legs in the attack: Catarina Macario on for Maika Hamano. Elena Sadiku also made a change around the one hour mark: Bruna Costa came off for Hayes.

 

With thirty more minutes on the clock the hosts are still in the game. Taking a point against Chelsea would be a huge achievement for them. Celtic surprised Chelsea with quick thinking from Ashworth-Clifford. Her pass to Smith was just too far ahead and Perisset was there to block any effort.

 

 

Excellent defending from the hosts

 

Catarina Macario tested her fire power three times in a short amount of time. Two of her efforts saved by Daugherty and the third went wide. The striker recovered from an ACL injury last season and has been back with the squad since.

 

Elena Sadiku made a triple changes: Agnew, Ross & Gallacher replaced by Cavanagh, Noonan & Cross Noonan.

 

Chelsea got really close to the 1-3 when Nathalie Björn received the ball from in the box. Her shot went over the cross bar. Celtic reminded Chelsea not to get too comfortable. Ashworth-Clifford got away from Mpome, her effort was saved by Mušović and cleared by the defence.

 

Daugherty keeping Celtic alive

 

Aggie Beever-Jones laid the ball back to Jean-Francois just outside the box. She fired away her shot but Daugherty saw right through it, diving to the bottom right corner to make the save. Next Beever-Jones tried for goal herself. Again Daugherty had to make an important save. The Chelsea pressure in the box was very high, a great moment for Celtic to profit from the space in the back. The high press from the hosts brings a lot of trouble to the Chelsea backline, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

 

A messy four minutes of added time

 

In the last ten minutes of the game four yellow cards are awarded. The game gets messier with more fouls and frustration. Celtic want to score the equaliser, while Chelsea is slowing down the play when they can. The match ends with a red card (double yellow) for Aggie Beever-Jones. Her first yellow was for coming back on the pitch too early after receiving treatment. Her second for a late tackle.

 

Nevertheless: Chelsea secures the win and takes home three points.
