Liverpool transfer news as Arne Slot changes are afoot at Anfield ahead of the 2024/25 season

For the first time in nine years, a Liverpool XI will soon be selected for a match by someone other than Jurgen Klopp – save for a side picked by Under-23s boss Neil Critchley during a weird week in 2019. That honour will belong to Arne Slot.
Liverpool were left ‘furious’ by injury to goalkeeper who has delivered on transfer promise
Alisson
There aren’t too many spots in the league as secure as Alisson’s at Liverpool. With all the change between Klopp and Slot, plus the possible new additions in front, the Brazilian goalkeeper will need to be at his very best and provides a brilliant base to build from.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Certainly not being used in central midfield, and contract uncertainty aside, Alexander-Arnold is still set to be a central hub of Liverpool’s play. How Slot will use the full-back waits to be seen, but with Conor Bradley as backup, this position is in safe hands.
Gleison Bremer
Perhaps the spot in most need of attention? Ibrahima Konate has shown signs of being a top-level option – then again who doesn’t alongside the next man –
Juventus’ Bremer has long been linked with a move to England and Liverpool’s name now being in the conversation makes sense. He has a lot of attributes to make him an attractive prospect.
Virgil van Dijk in
This one writes itself, frankly. Again, contract quandaries left out, Van Dijk is the rock at Liverpool and that isn’t about to change because of a change of coach.
Andy Robertson
At 30, Robertson is not in danger of losing his spot, far from it, but attention does need to be placed on future-proofing. Liverpool either need to find the Bradley equivalent to Robertson, or they need to sign one. He will start the season in charge of this spot, and rightly so, but the thought may well have to remain in their minds.
Dominik Szoboszlai
If the Szoboszlai of 2023 could return then Slot’s job will be a lot easier. The midfielder was asked to do a balancing job in an unbalanced midfield but for a while he looked like the perfect answer.
2024 has been tougher for the Hungarian though and if his fitness issues have taken a big toll then there is work to do. For now, he has shown enough to warrant being a first-choice player from the start.
Joao Neves
With a release clause of over £100million, Benfica have done it again. They certainly know how to give a platform to talented midfielder, that’s for sure.
Liverpool legend banished to youth team as
market, but he is extremely expensive. If the Reds can find room in their budget to part with such a sum of money then Neves is a player that warrants the attention. He could be the guy to make it all tick. This is plenty of responsibility for someone to take over, but so far in his young career he looks able to do it.
Wataru Endo
From flashy central midfielders to the most workmanlike of all. Endo was a steal last summer and perhaps in an ideal world Liverpool would look to upgrade and get more from a player in this position, but if they are to accommodate from the frontline, and the two attacking full-backs, someone has to be the water-carrier, as they say. Endo does that role very well.
Mohamed Salah
You can insert the contract stuff again here, and there is less certainty over Salah’s future compared to that of Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold, especially with the previous interest and big offers. Another play for him is possible this summer, and maybe there is an argument for Slot to break from Salah and for a new era to start.
This would be a big risk though and in general, teams with Salah in are better than those without. He offers assurances and a base level that very few can bring. Liverpool would need to find a seriously good alternative on the market for anything to stop Salah starting games regularly again next season.
