BREAKING NEWS: Midfielder speaks out on possible transfer to Liverpool as agent sent message
Liverpool failed to acquire a midfielder over the summer after missing out on Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad but might reassess options in
Morten Frendrup has responded to rumours linking him
Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup has played down transfer links with Liverpool having been connected to the Reds over the summer. The 23-year-old had also been tipped for a potential switch last January, albeit to a lesser degree.
Since then, Liverpool have had a change in coach and undergone a boardroom switch-up but loose links with the Dane re-emerged over the summer. The central midfielder, who can also play as a defensive pivot, played 39 times for Genoa last term, recording two goals and six assists in the
There was more scepticism over the club’s apparent interest in Frendrup, and the player himself has confirmed that no official enquiry was submitted. Speaking to Tipsbladet ahead of a possible debut senior cap for Denmark, Frendrup – whose idol growing up was Steven Gerrard – was asked about the links with Liverpool.
“It’s obviously a huge club, but it’s a long way from concrete interest,” he said. “For me, it’s about doing as well as possible. So, everything else is up to my agent.”
Liverpool ultimately refrained from landing a midfielder after being left disappointed in their chase of Zubimendi. There may be scope for a January approach given the Reds spent just £42.5million on two players over the summer, albeit Zubimendi will still have two-and-a-half years left on his deal.
New Liverpool sporting chief Richard Hughes described the club’s approach to the summer market as “opportunistic”. The Reds ended up purchasing Juventus winger Federico Chiesa for just £12.5m while £29m goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili will arrive from Valencia next year.
