Bournemouth vs Liverpool score, result, highlights as Darwin Nunez stunner sees Reds into Carabao Cup quarter-finals

Published

on

Goals: Kluivert 64′; Gakpo 31′, Nunez 70′

Name – Caoimhin Kelleher – 6 (out of 10)
Struggled at times with his distribution and in dealing with aerial balls but really should not be judged too harshly given the nature of the conditions. Still managed some decent stops.

Joe Gomez – 8
Was a useful outlet as Liverpool dominated the first half and then stuck to his task defensively in the second. Cleared off the line brilliantly at one point.

Joel Matip – 7
An experienced head who dealt with the dreadful wind as well as anyone. His front-footed defending ensured Bournemouth weren’t as dangerous as they might have been.

Jarell Quansah – 8 (Man of the Match)
Did not look like a 20-year-old as he helped fend off an aerial bombardment in the second period.

Also used the first half to show off an impressive passing range and ability to bring the ball out from the back. Liverpool have a gem on their hands.

Kostas Tsimikas – 6
As always, a dependable presence at left-back in the absence of Andy Robertson. Did not manage to create as much as he can but did not let anyone down in his defensive duties.

Wataru Endo – 6
Put himself about and was tidy enough on the ball but struggled to help Liverpool play out when Bournemouth pressed in the second half.

Curtis Jones – 6
Barely lost the ball as you would expect, but had a largely quiet night before making way on the hour mark.

Harvey Elliott – 8
Liverpool’s most creative player on the night, as evidenced by the three key passes he put up. It is no coincidence that his shot led to Gakpo’s opener, either.

Dominik Szoboszlai – 7
Managed four shots and a key pass from an unfamiliar wide position but it only made you long for him to be in the middle where he can influence things even more.

Mohamed Salah – 6
Not vintage Mohamed Salah but he is always a handful for defences even when chances are hard to come by. Continually showed for the ball.

Cody Gakpo – 7
Doesn’t get as many chances to show off his excellent hold-up play when starting wide but tried to make himself available. Took his goal well from close-range.

Liverpool were put under heavy pressure throughout the 90 minutes in the driving south-coast rain, but as they have many times this season, the Reds pressed through adversity and worked a hard-earned result by the full-time whistle.

Forced to deal with a determined and prolific Bournemouth performance in miserable rainy conditions, Liverpool advanced to the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 victory spurred on by a Darwin Nunez stunner that proved the difference

The Cherries were electric throughout the match, and Justin Kluivert’s 64th-minute equaliser gave them a real chance at procuring an upset result, but they were bested by quality in front of goal.

Dominik Szoboszlai was the best player across the first half, playing a part in multiple Liverpool opportunities before Cody Gakpo put the Reds in front. However, the second half swung in favour of the hosts, as Kluivert and his teammates were bright in the build-up.

Yet where Nunez eventually proved decisive, Bournemouth fell short as the hosts made a mess of many quality opportunities. In the draw following the round of fixtures, Liverpool were matched up with West Ham in the quarterfinal round at home.

DRAW: Liverpool vs. West Ham in Carabao Cup quarterfinal

Following the match, Liverpool were drawn against West Ham at Anfield in the quarterfinals.

The other matches include Everton vs. Fulham, Chelsea vs. Newcastle, and Port Vale vs. Middlesborough as both remaining lower-league sides were drawn together.

Also, after the match, it was reported that the adverse weather conditions have extended to the surrounding area, and Liverpool’s flight back to Merseyside has been cancelled as a result.

FULLTIME: Bournemouth 1-2 Liverpool

Bournemouth gave it their best shot across the final 45 minutes, but come up short as Darwin Nunez’s exceptional goal proves enough to put Liverpool in the EFL Cup quarterfinals.

The Reds were put under real pressure in awful weather conditions, but managed to persevere as they have so many times this season. Another flawed but gutty performance by Jurgen Klopp’s side, and they advance in the knockout competition.

Bournemouth vs Liverpool: Second Half

90+4 min: A foul by Ryan Gravenberch gives Bournemouth a set-piece chance right at the death, and Bournemouth goalkeeper Andrei Radu comes up for the chance, but all he does is block the eventual effort on goal.

89th min: Bournemouth have been pressing hard for an equaliser, and Jarell Quansah is forced to head a cross out for a corner at his own end. The Cherries have been exceptional in the buildup, but have very little in the way of final product. Players slipping on the slick turf, poor decisions from set-pieces, and other terrible decision-making has done them in.

Five minutes of added time are shown.

81st min: Another two changes for Bournemouth, as Alex Scott and Adam Smith are hooked, in favour of Kieffer Moore and Max Aarons. Jurgen Klopp makes his final swap as well, with Diogo Jota entering for Cody Gakpo.

78th min: Here’s a turn of events…it’s stopped raining! The precipitation was furious through most of this game, but it’s finally come to an end, hopefully for good.

74th min: Bournemouth make a double change, with Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo withdrawn in favour of Hamed Traore and David Brooks. Liverpool reply with the introduction of Ryan Gravenberch is on to replace Dominic Szoboszlai.

70th min: GOAL! LIVERPOOL! The Reds are in front on an absolute STUNNER from Darwin Nunez! He brings down a long ball horribly, with his poor first touch forcing him way wide left, but that doesn’t phase the Uruguayan at all. He takes on Chris Mepham one-on-one and delivers a spectacular curler that beats the goalkeeper and tucks into the top corner! WHAT a goal!

Watch in USA:

67th min: Ryan Christie fires a deep effort wide, with Bournemouth now in total control of this match. Cherries manager Andoni Iraola is booked by the referee for something he said to the officiating crew. He seemed to be unhappy by a foul whistled in favour of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

64th min: GOAL! BOURNEMOUTH! Justin Kluivert has his first Bournemouth goal, and you can say it’s been coming! The wind plays a part as the Cherries have a corner delivered by Alex Scott to the far post, and Kluivert’s unmarked on the doorstep to poke it home with his head.

61st min: Chance, Bournemouth! ANTOINE SEMENYO HAS MISSED A SITTER! OH NO!

Liverpool completely lost track of the Bournemouth winger at the far post, and he’s completely free on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat, but he lashes a horrible close-range effort wide of the near post! Oh my goodness, that’s a horrible miss.

Then moments later the new man Marcus Tavernier forces a good save of Caoimhin Kelleher with a shot from atop the penalty area. Bournemouth are in fine form now!

60th min: Chance, Liverpool! Mohamed Salah heads just wide! He connects with a deep ball to the front of goal but can’t get the right contact.

Bournemouth make a change as well, bringing on Marcus Tavernier to replace Phillip Billing.

58th min: Liverpool are the first to dip into their bench, with Jurgen Klopp bringing on a host of first-team players. Darwin Nunez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Alexis Mac Allister are all set to enter. Wataru Endo, Curtis Jones, and Curtis Jones make way, leaving Cody Gakpo to drop into midfield.

While the subs are prepared, the Reds nearly concede an ugly goal as they gift Justin Kluivert the ball in their own third, but his shot is blocked.

55th min: Cody Gakpo is booked for bringing down Adam Smith, and then in the aftermath, Smith is also booked, presumably for asking that Gakpo be cautioned.

53rd min: Chance, Bournemouth! JOE GOMEZ HEADS OFF THE LINE! Alex Scott very nearly uses the wind to his advantage and scores directly from a corner, as the ball floats over the head of the Liverpool goalkeeper, but Gomez is positioned perfectly at the far post to prevent the Cherries from leveling the match.

A yellow card is shown to Milos Kerkez in the aftermath.

47th min: The wind is swirling, and with Bournemouth now knowing the gusts are at their back, they are pressing Liverpool hard. A ball hit high in the air catches the heavy wind and literally stops its lateral movement, falling vertically to the ground.

It’s blustering enough that the TV commentator recalls U.S. international goalkeeper Brad Friedel who scored for Tottenham in similar conditions with plenty of help from the weather.

Kickoff: The teams are back out for the final 45 minutes, with the sideways rain still coming down in sheets. Bournemouth looked a good threat in the first half, but with a few chances already gone begging, we’ll see if they have more in the tank for the second half or if the Reds will put them away comfortably.

No changes for either side to start the second half.

HALFTIME: Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool

A very lively first half, especially considering the extremely ugly weather conditions, comes to a close with Cody Gakpo’s goal the difference. Both sides had good chances, but it’s the Reds who had the decisive moment.

Dominic Szoboszlai was the star performer for the Reds, deployed out wide right and sending in both quality crosses and a few good efforts on goal himself as well. Justin Kluivert was the best Bournemouth player, creating chances up front as well, but unable to find a way past Caoimihn Kelleher thus far.

Bournemouth vs Liverpool: First Half

39th min: Adam Smith is very lucky not to be shown a first-half yellow card for yanking Cody Gakpo’s arm back while he charged forward through midfield, stopping a promising Liverpool move.

35th min: Chance, Liverpool! Dominic Szoboszlai comes close to a second for Liverpool! He’s really up for this match, and as no defender comes to close him down at the top of the penalty area, he touches onto his right and rifles a low shot that skids just a shadow wide of the far post!

30th min: GOAL! LIVERPOOL! Cody Gakpo puts the visitors in front! The Liverpool corner is cleared initially out to Jarell Quansah at the top of the penalty area, and he drives a shot low on frame that he hopes to get through the trees. It falls to Harvey Elliott on the doorstep who produces a wonderful flick, and while that’s saved exceptionally well by Andrei Radu, it falls right to Gakpo on the doorstep who slams home an easy finish.

29th min: Chance, Bournemouth! This time the Cherries get on the counter-attack and Ryan Christie’s long-ball finds Justin Kluivert, but his low effort is, like Harvey Elliott moments ago, too central and ultimately saved — spilled for a moment, but only just.

The attacking moves are really starting to flow now!

27th min: Chance, Liverpool! The best chance of the game so far falls to Liverpool! Dominic Szoboszlai’s cross, which has caused danger a few times already, falls to Harvey Elliott, but his weak redirected shot is saved! Too central with the eventual effort.

25th min: Bournemouth, who have been very bright in the attacking third thus far, nearly put together one of the most beautiful team goals you’ll see, but Ryan Christie’s looped effort towards the far post (or was it a cross?) flashes just wide. Nearly!

22nd min: There’s a huge penalty shout from the home fans as Dominic Solanke is convinced Jarell Quansah brought him down right in the top corner of the penalty area, but the referee waves away the protests. Solanke is beside himself.

18th min: Mohamed Salah misses a tight-angle chance at the near post, but the flag was up anyways. Harvey Elliott’s brilliant through-ball made it happen, but it wouldn’t have counted.

The rain is absolutely driving down in sheets, making things very difficult for both sides looking to gain a foothold in the match. The two clubs have had a few half-chances, but nothing of true quality yet. To give you an idea of the absurd conditions, the TV broadcaster says “we aren’t quite heading for the hurricane shelters just yet” before saying the rain is so horizontal with wind that it’s being pushed into the back of the commentator’s booth.

12th min: Chance, Bournemouth! Justin Kluivert has a go on goal, producing a first-time whip off a speculative long ball into the penalty area. It requires a diving save and hold from Caoimihn Kelleher, although the shot may have been going wide.

Then moments later Kelleher is required again, this time from a more dangerous situation, as Kluivert has a looping whip on goal after a deft bit of tekkers sees him around a defender. He was likely offside in the buildup though, and it would have been ruled out had it found the net.

7th min: Liverpool’s first real chance in front of net sees a cross from Dominic Szoboszlai ping off a defender into a dangerous position, where Chris Mepham awkwardly clears it out for a corner with an outstretched leg. That had own-goal written all over it, but it’s harmlessly over the end line instead.

5th min: Liverpools’ formation is interesting to say the least. Dominic Szoboszlai is playing along the front line at right wing, where he often found himself at RB Leipzig. Mohamed Salah is at central striker, while Cody Gakpo is wide left. That leaves Harvey Elliott in midfield opposite Curtis Jones, supported by Wataru Endo in the middle.

The ball is bouncing very awkwardly thanks to the adverse weather conditions, and you wonder whether that could play a role in this match.

Kickoff: The match is under way from a suddenly rainy Vitality Stadium! A spot in the quarterfinals is at stake, with as many as six Premier League clubs potentially involved amongst the final eight clubs. One of them will emerge from this top flight matchup, but who will it be?

Bournemouth vs Liverpool: Pre-match commentary, analysis, stats, and more

15 mins to kickoff: The nasty weather seems to have remained away for much of the prematch buildup, as kickoff draws closer.

30 mins to kickoff: Deploying Mohamed Salah today is a big risk by Jurgen Klopp, as there aren’t many chances to rest his superstar forward this season, and today was potentially one of those opportunities. He is going to be away from the team on international duty in the winter for Africa Cup of Nations, and a run in that tournament zapped Salah’s fitness levels two years ago, so rest is key at various stages this year in advance of that.

With Salah in the fray, however, Liverpool become an even greater threat. The Egyptian has a sensational record against Bournemouth, scoring nine goals in nine career appearances against the club. He bagged a goal in the 3-1 win earlier this year, and scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 victory back in 2018

45 mins to kickoff: For Bournemouth, head coach Andoni Iraola has really gone for it, hardly rotating his squad at all despite a number of injury issues and a relegation battle to keep at the forefront of their minds. Dominic Solanke starts, as do minutes leaders Illia Zabarnyi and Phillip Billing.

Justin Kluivert is brought into the fold on the wing, as is exciting Ghanan wide player Antoine Semenyo, who scored the Cherries’ only goal against Liverpool in the 3-1 defeat back in August.

1 hour to kickoff: Lineups are in. We expected squad rotation for Liverpool, but not exactly in the manner that’s been produced by Jurgen Klopp. Mohamed Salah starts, while Dominic Szoboszlai is featured in midfield, while Ryan Gravenberch surprisingly sits. That could signal a promotion of sorts for the young Dutchman, who may be more of a Premier League player now than simply a Cup deployment.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Jarell Quansah gets the nod at centre-back alongside Joel Matip. The Liverpool bench is oddly devoid of true attacking players, with only Diogo Jota present.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: There are a few other EFL Cup fourth round fixtures which feature two Premier League clubs today. Kicking 15 minutes prior to this match is West Ham vs. Arsenal, while Everton and Burnley meet at Goodison Park and Manchester United host Newcastle in the late kickoff.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: It’s nasty weather on the south coast tonight, with temperatures around 12 degrees Celsius (52 degrees Farenhiet) and rain in the area. In fact, there were even rumours that the match would be called off due to inclement weather, although those seem to be wide of the mark.

It does not appear to be raining at Vitality Stadium at the moment, however, so hopefully it holds off a bit longer.

1 hour 45 mins to kick: Luis Diaz will reportedly not play a part for Liverpool tonight while he takes time away to resolve his father’s kidnapping back home in Colombia. There has reportedly been an arrest made in the case, which is good news, although the status of his father is still not yet known.

Residents of Diaz’s hometown of Barrancas have marched to demand the release of his father.

2 hours to kickoff: Playing on the road this season has not phased Liverpool in the slightest. All three of their negative results have come away from home, but they’ve still lost just one of their past 12 away games in all competitions, a stretch that includes a multi-goal win at Austrian side LASK and a quality 2-1 victory at the Newcastle United fortress of St. James’ Park.

With a trip to the south coast here, they’ll be required to draw on that experience once again, as they gear up for another away day on the weekend against Luton Town in league play, followed by a visit to France to play Toulouse in the Europa League.

Bournemouth vs Liverpool lineups & team news

Squad rotation in this match was something to watch for both sides, and while Liverpool have switched things up, the hosts Bournemouth largely have not.

Rotation candidates Dominic Solanke and Phillip Billing, and Ilya Zabarnyi have all accumulated heavy minutes loads this season, but all are deployed today in a strong Cherries lineup.

Tyler Adams will be unavailable until 2024 thanks to a second hamstring surgery this year, while Ryan Fredericks, Neto, and Emiliano

. Marcondes are all recovering from slight knocks.

Bournemouth starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Radu (GK) — A. Smith, Zabarnyi, Mepham, Kerkez — A. Scott, Billing — Semenyo, Christie, Kluivert — Solanke.

Bournemouth subs (9): Plain, Aarons, Sensei, Rothwell, Traore, Brooks, Dango, Tavernier, K. Moore.

Curtis Jones serves the final game of his suspension and is absent for Liverpool, with Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic also ruled out. Andrew Robertson will be out until the start of 2024, after undergoing shoulder surgery, with Luis Diaz granted a leave of absence following reports of his father kidnapped in Colombia.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has been heavy-handed with his squad rotation in cup matches this season, and that plays true today, but Mohamed Salah starts in the EFL Cup for just the fourth time in his career.

Ryan Gravenberch, who has earned more Premier League minutes of late thanks to his cup performances, is sat, while Jarell Quansah and Caoimhin Kelleher are brought into the side.

Liverpool starting lineup (4-3-3): Kelleher (GK) — Gomez, Matip, Quansah, Tsimikas — Elliott, Endo, Jones — Szoboszlai, Salah, Gakpo.

Liverpool subs (9): Adrian (GK), Scanlon, Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Konate, Nunez, Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Jota.
