Celtic continue scouting of Danish striker, an era could be ending
Celtic scouts have reportedly been maintaining their analysis of Mathias Kvistgaarden. The Danish striker has been a target for the Scottish Champions since last summer but no deal has been forthcoming.
According to Danish media outlet Tipsbladet, Celtic watched the 22-year-old. Kvistgaarden started in Brondby’s draw with FC Nordsjælland, scoring in the 32nd minute.
The club will be maintaining an interest in the player who, in 108 appearances, has scored 37 goals and assisted 17 times.
Celtic were linked, albeit briefly, with a transfer return for Kvistgaarden before completing a £9m move for Adam Idah. There may be some truth in Kvistgaarden being spied as a potential first team signing at Celtic; although, it may signify the end of an era at Celtic.
Celtic currently have two first team strikers with Idah competing against Kyogo for time on the pitch. Brendan has said he wants to have two ‘starters’ with a third option coming from the club’s youth academy.
Kyogo opted to switch his representation over the summer with the Japanese Internationalist moving to CAA Base, the agency that helped broker Ange’s move to Spurs. Manchester City were linked with a move for Kyogo over the summer but beyond an enquiry, there was nothing concrete in the rumours of Kyogo making the move to join Pep Guardiola’s side as a deputy to Erling Haaland.
Kyogo was signed from Vissel Kobe in 2021 for a fee of around £4m and was one of Ange’s first signings. In over three seasons, Kyogo has scored 79 goals and assisted on 18 occasions. Kyogo turns 30 in January and whilst he has a long term contract at the club, the player may fancy a crack at Premier League football. Given his age and resale value, Celtic will likely be willing to facilitate a deal next summer but fans would only be happy if the club made contingency plans if he were to go.
The fact that Kyogo has changed his agent a year after agreeing a deal with Celtic suggested that a move might be on the player’s mind. Although, given his importance to the team, Celtic might be reluctant to enter a bid for the attacker.
