Alan Shearer left annoyed by what VAR did in Liverpool vs Chelsea game yesterday

Alan Shearer has now been discussing his annoyance at a decision VAR made during Liverpool’s win over Chelsea yesterday.

It was a final of missed chances between Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino’s sides.

And whilst many came away from the game lamenting missed chances, perhaps it was better advised to send praise in the direction of Caoimhin Kelleher and Djordje Petrovic.

Both keepers made some outstanding saves, and perhaps would have even proved hard to beat had the game gone to penalties.

But Petrovic was ultimately beaten twice by Virgil van Djik in the final, only for one of the efforts not to stand.

VAR’s intervention, which ruled Liverpool’s goal offside, may have been to the delight of Chelsea fans, but Alan Shearer certainly wasn’t impressed.

Speaking on ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast today, Shearer thought it was a big relief that Liverpool ended up winning the game.

Shearer was adamant that the wrong call was made, and that it was actually Ben Chilwell marking the Liverpool captain, not Levi Colwill.

Alan Shearer left fuming with VAR call which nearly cost Liverpool against Chelsea

Speaking on the podcast, Shearer feared how strong Klopp’s reaction would have been at the end of the game would were Liverpool not victorious.

He said: “I couldn’t understand it either. Chilwell was marking Van Dijk, not Colwill. He might have got there, he may not have got there.

“But once the on-field decision was given you need something massive to overturn that, especially when it’s something so subjective.

“But from a Liverpool point of view luckily they won it because I think it was such a huge decision and a wrong call, you can imagine the reaction from Klopp at the end of the game if it hadn’t gone for them.

“I just didn’t like the decision at all.”

Of course, many Chelsea fans will probably agree with Shearer in hindsight, even if they were grateful to remain level with Liverpool at the time.

And whilst VAR did seem to get it wrong on this occasion, perhaps both teams would still lament their finishing if it came down to such a call.

All that being said, Liverpool fans may enjoy what Darwin Nunez was seen doing after extra-time at Wembley yesterday.
