Liverpool had to work hard, but it eventually got the job done as it beat Everton 2-0 in the Merseyside derby at Anfield. Once again, Mohamed Salah proved to be the hero as he struck twice late on to secure the victory.

Having moved top of the Premier League table — at least until Manchester City, Arsenal and Spurs play Brighton, Chelsea and Fulham respectively this weekend — Liverpool is now in a very promising position. The Reds also have a decent run of fixtures to come.

In the Premier League, up next is Nottingham Forest (H), Luton (A) and Brentford (H) before the international break. A trip to Manchester City comes after that in another early kick-off but Fulham, Sheffield United and Crystal Palace follow that.

Jürgen Klopp should certainly be eyeing up plenty of opportunities for wins in that period, with a Carabao Cup tie against Bournemouth a good chance to progress towards a trophy. Meanwhile, the Europa League group stages could be wrapped up with a couple of games to spare if Liverpool can beat Toulouse home and away in the next couple of weeks.

Tottenham, who went into the weekend as league leaders (mainly because of the VAR error that led to Spurs beating Liverpool before the break), has no cup or European games coming up because it is already out of the Carabao Cup and finished outside even the Conference League places last season. That is a big advantage, but its title credentials will soon be tested.

After Fulham (H) on Monday, it has Crystal Palace (A), Chelsea (H) and Wolves (A). Those are winnable but after the November international break comes, in order, Aston Villa (H), Manchester City (A), West Ham (H) and Newcastle (H). That is a tricky four-game run that will almost certainly see a few dropped points.
