Liverpool in a blow to Newcastle transfer hopes

Jarell Quansah has agreed a new long-term deal with Liverpool to commit his future to the Reds after the club rejected interest in him in the summer from Newcastle

Jarrell Quansah has signed a new deal at Liverpool

Updated1arell Quansah has agreed a new long-term deal with Liverpool to commit his future to Anfield.

Newcastle eyed Quansah up in the summer and wanted him to be included in a deal which would have seen Scouser Anthony Gordon move to Liverpool. Liverpool immediately ended talks with Newcastle because they were not prepared to lose Quansah.

Cody Gakpo reveals what is more important for Liverpool than being top of the Premier League

“I couldn’t be happier at this minute,” said the England Under-21 international. “I think the way the new manager has come in, his coaching style has definitely been a massive part of that and I think it is the best club in the world for me to develop at and become a better player.

“I think the players around me, who I’m looking to work hard off and listen to, I think they’re the best in the position at the minute. So, like I said, there is probably no better place I could be.”

He added: “I just want to take each step as it comes, every training session as it comes.

“I just want to keep trying to get better on the training pitch really and as long as I stay tunnel vision to that… I just want to keep progressing, keep trying to learn, and keep trying to get better and better [by] trying to learn off all the senior players, and I’ve got a lot in my position so anything I can take from them I am trying to do day by day.

“I am hoping to obviously push as well, hopefully we’re breeding quite a good environment that we’re all challenging for places and as long as we’re doing that I think we’ll all become better players and ultimately become a better team.”

Arne Slot will be delighted by this new deal for one of his rising star

Quansah, who has come through the ranks at Liverpool, also scored two goals, including the last of Jurgen Klopp’s reign against Wolves in May. His standout season was recognised by former England boss Gareth Southgate and he handed him his first senior call-up when he named him in his provisional squad for Euro 2024.

Quansah did not make the squad for Germany, but it is clear it is just a matter of time before he makes his senior debut for the Three Lions. He began the season as skipper Virgil van Dijk’s defensive partner at Ipswich, but was replaced by head coach Arne Slot with Ibrahima Konate.

He has made just one other appearance under Slot this season in the Carabao Cup win over Ipswich. However he is a key player at Liverpool and his importance will only grow, especially if van Dijk leaves in the summer and the Dutch star is out of contract in July.
