All the latest Liverpool news and transfer gossip during the international break, including updates as reports suggest Kylian Mbappe reached a verbal agreement with the Reds in 2023

The international break is almost over which means Liverpool’s preparations for the return of the Premier League continue. Nottingham Forest visit Anfield on Saturday as they look to end the Reds’ run of three straight wins as Arne Slot’s side remains the only team to not concede in the top flight this season.

Alexis Mac Allister provided an injury scare for Liverpool during the international break after being forced off against Chile with an adductor problem. He hadn’t featured in Argentina’s build-up for Tuesday night’s showdown with Colombia, however he was a second-half introduction in their 2-1 defeat.

Although the transfer window has closed until January, Liverpool continue to be linked with moves for potential additions. They bolstered their attacking ranks with a surprise move for Federico Chiesa but they are being mooted to further strengthen the department.

According to a report, Liverpool are monitoring Bryan Mbuemo with Brentford said to value the forward at £40million. Elsewhere, there has been high praise for Liverpool duo Ryan Gravenberch and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The pair enjoyed standout performances in the international break with the Dutchman sparking his own highlight reel. Alexander-Arnold was named player of the match for successive Three Lions matches as he played a starring role in England’s 2-0 win over Finland.

We will be keeping an eye on all the other news and dealings around the Premier League. Manchester City and Arsenal are facing fresh injury concerns following the break for international football – on Tuesday, Nathan Ake was stretchered off for Holland, hours after Gunners captain Martin Odegaard arrived back in London on crutches following an ankle problem.

Doak on loan challenge

Liverpool youngster Ben Doak has admitted he is looking forward to playing regularly after joining Middlesbrough on loan for the 2024/25 season.

“I’ll be just happy to be playing,” he says. “Obviously coming from such a big club, it can be difficult to get games.

“My aim this season is to just improve as a player, and you can only really do that by playing games regularly. So hopefully I can give good performances that ultimately warrant my place in the team.

“I cannot wait to get out there in front of the fans and get my career up and running. Hopefully I can do well. There were no bad elements to coming here. Time will tell.

“Hopefully I can just go out there and do what I do, please the fans with my performances and please myself.”

Chiesa Liverpool debut twist after injury setback

Liverpool’s Harvey Elliot injury blow may present a quicker than planned opportunity for new summer signing Federico Chiesa. The Reds signed the Italy international from Juventus during the summer in a deal potentially worth up to £12.5million – and Chiesa was their only senior outfield addition.

Chiesa is yet to make his debut for Liverpool after he was signed just 48 hours before the Reds faced Manchester United in their last match-up before the international break. The 26-year-old has been training alongside Liverpool U21s at the AXA Training Centre during the gap in a bid to sharpen up his fitness.

Arne Slot faced a nervous wait to see all of the Liverpool players on international duty return injury-free. However, the Reds were dealt a blow when it came to Elliott’s availability with 21-year-old suffering a fractured ankle.

Chiesa could subsequently replace him in the matchday squad to face Nottingham Forest with a debut very likely as a result

Arsenal star compared to Liverpool legend

To most, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk remains the best centre-back in the Premier League.

However, Arsenal star William Saliba is certainly close behind with Ally McCoist clearly a huge fan of the France international.

Speaking talkSPORT BET, he said: “William Saliba is becoming a Rolls-Royce of a defender, and I think he has some real similarities to Alan Hansen—both are very good defenders but also possess a certain level of class on the ball.

“I think Saliba can very much be categorised as one of the best centre-backs in the world now.”
