Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon spurned a golden chance in England’s win over the Republic of Ireland after being played in by Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold

Anthony Gordon had a message for Trent Alexander-Arnold after England beat the Republic of Ireland

Anthony Gordon apologised for failing to score after being teed up by Trent Alexander-Arnold – before teasing he wouldn’t make the same mistake next time.

The Newcastle winger, 23, was named in the England team that beat the Republic of Ireland 2-0 in Dublin on Saturday evening despite barely featuring for the Three Lions during Euro 2024.

It was Gordon who missed a chance in the build-up to England’s opening goal, which was eventually buried by Declan Rice. Jack Grealish plundered a second soon after to seal a comfortable win for interim head coach Lee Carsley.

Gordon was picked out expertly by Alexander-Arnold, starting at right-back, only for the former Everton man to be thwarted by Caoimhin Kelleher in the home goal.
