Liverpool signed Federico Chiesa this summer from Juventus with Arne Slot hoping the Italian will provide competition for Mohamed Salah

New Liverpool signing Federico Chiesa has a poor record with injuries

Liverpool’s players are currently away on international duty after an impressive start to the season. Arne Slot’s team have a perfect record so far with three wins from three in the Premier League without conceding a goal.

One player who is yet to come into the mix for the Reds is new signing Federico Chiesa. The Italian arrived at Anfield for a fee understood to be worth £12.5million after falling out of favour at Juventus.

Chiesa’s arrival appears to be a shrewd piece of business with the winger adding strength in depth to Liverpool’s forward options. But the winger’s historical injury issues will be of concern and recent research by Sporting Post backs that up.

The 26-year-old has spent an average of 95.6 days injured per season, at least a week more than any other Liverpool player. It is perhaps not a surprise with Chiesa making just 10 appearances for Juve across all competitions last season and just 18 in 2021/22.

Next on the list is centre-back Ibrahima Konate with 88.8 days out injured with forward Diogo Jota in at third. When it comes to the least injury-prone players, Wataru Endo has spent just 12.8 days injured whilst Alexis Mac Allister has been out for 15.4 days on average.

A possible solution to prevent future injury problems has been provided by Stephen Smith, CEO of Kitman Labs. Smith’s company are experts on sports science and performance intelligence, having worked with the Premier League and hundreds of other sports clubs and organisations.

“We typically can’t isolate a single variable and proclaim that it’s the lone contributing factor,” he told the Manchester Evening News back in May. “If we want the answer, we need to ask the real question. It’s not ‘what’s the main cause,’ it’s what do we know or understand about the contributing factors that led to it.

“It’s about better understanding what athletes are doing, how they’re recovering, gaining a better understanding on how they move, how they sleep.

“Additionally, it’s understanding each individual athlete’s strength and fitness profile at the same time, and being able to track, monitor and quantify all these things, then understand and identify the patterns that are occurring prior to injuries emerging, which will allow clubs to make better decisions in the future and apply those insights or that intelligence to how they manage their athletes going forward.”
