BREAKING NEWS!🚨LAST–MINUTE BOMBSHELL: Anthony Gordon deal resurrected, Eberechi Eze dream – Liverpool transfers after Giorgi Mamardashvili

Liverpool are close to signing Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili in a deal for the future but will want to get some business done before the transfer window

It hasn’t been the most active summer for Liverpool in the transfer market. The Reds remain the only club in the Premier League to not sign a single first team player so far this summer, with Arne Slot yet to receive any reinforcements to his squad.

Yet the “crescendo” predicted by the Reds’ sporting director Richard Hughes may still materialise, with goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili one transfer Liverpool are working on, with a deal expected to be struck with Valencia to see the Georgian stopper switch to Anfield next summer.

Liverpool could seal £100m transfers in final week of window after deal confirmed

With a week left of the transfer window, a late flourish of incomings would almost feel now like Liverpool have panicked after so much inertia in inactivity this summer.

Almost. The Reds’ squad remains a high-quality one capable of challenging on all fronts – but is it one that is able to land one of the major prizes on offer this summer? As things stand, they would need a remarkable injury-free run to be in the conversation for either the Champions League or the Premier League and the belief that they need a top-class defensive-minded midfielder has not really calmed down.

That won’t be Martin Zubimendi now and the three summer search to find that right candidate will now drag on unless something drastic changes. A sixth option in the forward line – specifically to ease the workload on Mohamed Salah – would be invaluable.

Ian Graham might have just accidentally revealed Liverpool’s transfer plan with seven days to go

Personally, Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace would be a great choice as someone who can float across either flank and do damage from central areas too, while Bruno Guimareas at Newcastle would be a top-class addition in the centre of the park. Both would come at significant cost, however. Alas.

Is there a world in which 29-year-old Raheem Sterling ends his Chelsea nightmare and returns to Liverpool in a relatively cut-price deal as a quality back-up to those who operate on the flanks at Anfield? I might have to don the tin hat to make that argument with any real degree of force

While Liverpool remain the only club in Europe’s top five leaves yet to bolster their ranks this summer, a week is a long time in transfer terms and so – perhaps slightly optimistically – I’m hoping the Reds will bring in three new players ahead of transfer deadline day.

For me, the absolute priority is a centre-back. Even without any departures this summer, I would argue Liverpool need to future-proof their back line considering Virgil van Dijk is out of contract at the end of the season and Ibrahima Konate has had rotten luck with injuries.

If Joe Gomez decides to depart, that need increases tenfold, though it is admittedly hard to identify a reasonably-priced replacement. If money was no object, I’d love Liverpool to test Everton’s resolve with a bid for Jarrad Branthwaite, who I think has all the ingredients to be a top-class centre back for years to come.

Sticking with the Everton theme, former Blue Anthony Gordon was my number one transfer pick heading into this summer with Liverpool in need of a pacy wide forward. Although they arguably need a right-winger more than a left, I think the prospect of signing Gordon after such an excellent season is too good to ignore.

And, while it looks like Liverpool aren’t planning to reignite their search for a defensive midfielder before next Friday, I certainly wouldn’t be against the Reds breaking the bank for Bruno Guimaraes, though the money involved and the fact he has just been made captain renders that very unlikely.

Seven days and counting, the transfer window is finally coming to an end. It’s been a strange one at Liverpool, with business never truly picking up in terms of incomings and some of the younger talent being moved on.

But a week is a long time in football and we’ve seen previously how quickly things can come together. In 2022, for example, there had been no suggestion of Liverpool’s interest in Luis Diaz, only for a deal for the Colombian winger to progress quickly on deadline day in January.
