Liverpool’s pursuit of Martin Zubimendi may have been given a boost after the midfielder turned down a move to Anfield.

The 25-year-old’s decision to stay in Spain with Real Sociedad, rather than join Arne Slot’s side, was a shock to many and left Liverpool as the only Premier League team without a summer signing. Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil had previously praised Zubimendi for his loyalty, stating that his choice to remain with the La Liga club held “value”, especially knowing that top-tier teams from across Europe were keen on signing him.

However, following a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, Alguacil has now refused to dismiss the possibility of Zubimendi leaving, hinting at a potential late twist in the transfer saga.

When asked about rival teams trying to sign his players, Alguacil stated: “This happens every year. (It happens) to everyone, to all the managers and sporting directors, every summer there’s movement… (Mikel) Merino and (Robin) Le Normand? There are no two players like them. And I won’t even tell you (about) if Zubimendi leaves or not last minute.

“They are all unreal players. …due to the things that they’ve done with us, Le Normand has left, Arsenal want Merino and Liverpool was willing to pay Zubimendi’s clause. But we can’t find excuses every time there’s no Merino and Le Normand.”

In other news, Newcastle could be looking to offload as many as four players this month with its sights set on Liverpool’s Joe Gomez. The Toon have been in regular talks with Crystal Palace over a potential deal for Guehi, but Palace’s firm £70 million ($91.2 million) valuation of the 24-year-old has left Eddie Howe’s team in a tricky situation.

Newcastle is understood to have made four bids for Guehi, the latest being a total offer of £65 million ($84.7 million), all of which have been promptly turned down. Now, according to TEAMtalk, Newcastle is shifting its focus back to Gomez after rumors of a swap deal involving Anthony Gordon emerged earlier this summer.
