Liverpool is being linked with a move for Olympics star Julio Soler as the Reds look to hone in on their first signing of the summer.

Arne Slot has endured an incredibly quiet transfer window since his tenure as Liverpool boss began last month, but now it appears he could finally strengthen his squad with the potential addition of the Argentine youngster.

Soler is being strongly touted with a move to Anfield, with reports from his homeland claiming the Reds are set to open talks with his current club, Lanus, over a transfer this week. The 19-year-old left-back has garnered plenty of attention after starring for Javier Mascherano’s Argentina at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

According to Argentine TV station TyC Sports, Lanus will accept a $15m (£12m/€14m) bid for Soler. Despite there being no formal offer as of yet, however, it’s been added that an offer is ‘likely’.

Soler could prove to be Andy Roberton’s long-term replacement, with the 30-year-old Scotsman still very much the team’s first-choice left-back. Current back-up Kostas Tsimikas has been linked with a move away from Anfield this summer, with his deal expiring in 2027.

Soler has caught the eye while playing for Argentina U23s at the Olympic Games in Paris. The left-back started all three of his side’s group games as they finished second in Group B behind Morocco, whom he grabbed an assist against in their opening match in Saint-Etienne.

Soler then played 60 minutes of the 3-1 victory over Iraq in the following game, before helping to keep a clean sheet in the 2-0 win against Ukraine to book his side’s place in the quarter-finals. However, the tournament would end in heartbreak for the youngster.

Soler was dropped by former Reds midfielder Mascherano for the knockout round clash with hosts France and, despite coming off the bench, he could do nothing to prevent his side from crashing out with a 1-0 defeat in front of 37,000 in Bordeaux.

Soler’s only previous international experience was with Argentina U20’s, whom he made four appearances for as captain following his debut in 2022. However, it’s his performances at club level which have caught the eye and ultimately landed him a place in Mascherano’s Olympics squad.

The teenager was actually a replacement for Brighton’s Valentin Barco, who was refused permission to join up with his country in Paris by the Seagulls. Regardless, Soler is known for his speed, dribbling, good projection in attack and quick ball recovery, according to Ole.

The left-back is currently plying his trade for Argentine Primera Division side Club Atletico Lanus, which is based in the city of Lanus in the Buenos Aires Province. Having joined the club’s academy at the age of nine, Soler eventually made his senior and professional debut in a 1–0 victory over national giants Independiente in April 2022.

In June 2023, he signed his first professional deal with the club until 2026 and has since made 36 appearances in all competitions for Granate, recording two assists as per Transfermarkt. Last season, he was part of the Lanus squad that achieved a fourth-placed finish in the league and qualified for the 2024 Copa Sudamericana.

In the current campaign, Soler has made 21 appearances in all competitions as Lanus sit ninth in the league standings, while they have also reached the last 16 of the Copa Sudamericana. Following his return from the Olympics, he will rejoin his teammates for the remainder of the campaign, although he could also be set for talks with Liverpool.
