The transfer window is in full swing and we’ll keep you updated with all the latest gossip and signings as they happen in our live blog.

The window is open until Friday, August 30 at 11pm in England, and Premier League clubs have already spent far more than the entirety of the January window.

Southampton are on the verge of signing Sporting’s Mateus Fernandes, talkSPORT understands.

The Saints will pay around £15million plus add-ons for the midfielder.

The 20-year-old is a product of Sporting’s youth set up and made 10 first team appearances for the club.

Fernandes spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Portuguese first division outfit Estoril Praia, where he recorded a goal and three assists in 35 matches.

It’s been a busy few days for Southampton after they signed Cameron Archer from Aston Villa and Lesley Ugochukwu on loan from Chelsea.

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil spoke to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook after his side’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal about the transfer window.

The Old Gold have sold Max Kilman for £40 million to West Ham and Pedro Neto to Chelsea for £54 million.

They are yet to replace them, but the Wolves boss was philosophical when asked about losing Kilman and Neto.

He said: “We knew early there was some interest, and it would get to a point where our valuation was met.

“Pedro, we knew there was interest from big clubs, and from my point of view, I want to keep all our best players, but I understand us having to sell, so £100 million for the pair was good business.

“Now we need to do the other end of that, and we’ve got some real good targets we’ve identified, so now, we need to try and get those deals done to help the

Arteta rules out striker signing

Arsenal got their 2024/25 Premier League campaign off to a great start with a 2-0 win over Wolves.

Kai Havertz started the game as the Gunners’ striker and scored the opener.

Gabriel Jesus also came off the bench, and Mikel Arteta is very happy with his forward options.

speaking to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook after the match, he said: “I have faith in him [Havertz].

“We have faith in Gabby [Jesus], Leo [Leandro Trossard] has played in that position.

“The best thing we can do is trust the players we have and try to improve.”

When asked about the transfer window in general, Arteta said: “There is time, and if there are options, we need to be

Leicester’s failed pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen forward Adam Hlozek has been confirmed, with the Czech winger being unveiled by new club Hoffenheim.

The Foxes had been in line to bring the 22-year-old to the King Power, having agreed a loan-to-buy deal subject to personal terms.

However, the Premier League new boys missed out thanks to a bit of a transfer merry-go-round, with Leicester’s Hlozek hopes shattered by Leeds and Brighton.

Georginio Rutter’s £40million move from Elland Road to the Amex Stadium saw Hoffenheim land a tidy sum due to a sell-on fee on their former striker.

That gave the German club enough cash to table a permanent bid for Hlozek, blowing Leicester’s offer out of the water with a

Arsenal target Mikel Merino has been left out of the Real Sociedad squad for their opening game of the new LaLiga season.

The Spain international and Euro 2024 winner is understood to be in advanced talks over a move to the Emirates Stadium.

The 28-year-old midfielder – formerly of Newcastle – has turned down the offer of a new contract at Sociedad this summer and is keen to join Mikel Arteta’s Gunners.

The boss even hinted a deal was close in his press conference this week, as he responded to questions over the transfer with a wry smile.

And now it appears the player is on his way to the north London side, having been left out of the Sociedad team for the weekend as talks continue.

Ipswich Town have just announced the double signing of Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City and Sam Szmodzics permanently from Blackburn Rovers.

It looks like they are closing in on another signing as Jens Cajuste is at Portman Road to watch the Tractor Boys take on Liverpool.

The midfielder was set to join Brentford last week from Napoli, but despite completing a medical, that deal collapsed.

The Premier League new boys have swooped in, and agreed to take Cajuste initially on loan with an option to buy.

Ipswich will pay £1 million for the loan, and then a further £10 million next summer should they decide to take up the

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez isn’t part of Liverpool’s squad for their 2024/25 Premier League opener against Ipswich Town because he’s looking for a move away.

The Times’ Paul Joyce claims the England defender is now actively looking for a way out of Anfield before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Gomez has never really been able to nail down a spot in the Reds’ backline, and after being floated as a potential part of an Anthony Gordon to Liverpool deal before the PSR deadline, he’s seems to have developed itchy feet.

The former Charlton defender joined Liverpool in 2015 and has made 224 appearances for the Reds, failing to score a single goal.

But now that he’s 27, he’s decided it’s time for something

Chelsea were once again questioned over their transfer policy after manager Enzo Maresca said Ben Chilwell is free to leave.

The Blues are trying to force out a number of long-serving players this summer, including academy graduates Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah.

It is well-known Chelsea must balance their books to stay in line with Profit and Sustainability Rules, but ex-Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant insists their transfer policy makes no sense from a football perspective.

“The thing is, you need a good squad depth,” Pennant told talkSPORT.

“You need your 11, but you need more. Maresca is saying he’s got 22… but you do need a good squad depth.

“And I think for cover, Chilwell is a fantastic left back.

“So to say he could go, again, it’s just all about their financial books and PSR.

“Marc Cucurella has been excellent. Don’t get me wrong. But if Chilwell can stay fit… he is a top quality left back.”

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has revealed that Ben Chilwell is free to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

Chilwell, who played just 64 minutes of football under Maresca during pre-season, has been deemed surplus to requirements.

Commenting on the left-back, Maresca said: “Chilly [Chilwell] is with us but he has not been training for the last few days because he has been ill.

“The reason he did not play versus Inter [Milan] was because, with Chilly it is quite clear, even though I love the way he is, the problem is, he is struggling a bit to find the right position.

“This morning we had 22 players training and if you ask all of them they will say they want to play against City on Sunday.

“But that is impossible. When you train every day and do not get any minutes it is not good for them or for me.

“I need to make a decision and probably it is better to leave and go and get minutes. The transfer window is open so we’ll see what

Done deal

Southampton have announced the signing of midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old said of his move: “I feel very happy. Southampton has a great history.

“A lot of great players came over here and played for Southampton, so I’m very happy to be part of the team now.

“It was a very easy decision. They just came back to Premier League. When I heard Southampton, when I spoke to the gaffer as well, I said, ‘I have to come here.’

“I’m just here to work hard and give everything for the fans and for myself as well.”

Boss Russell Martin added: “Lesley is a brilliant athlete who has all the ingredients to be a really top player in the future, and we want to help him achieve that. He combines his size and power with real composure in possession.

“He’s another young player we’ve brought in who has sampled the Premier League already, which is important, and someone we feel can help us in the midfield area with the physicality that he brings to the game.”

Xherdan Shaqiri has sealed an emotional return to Basel – 12 years after departing the Switzerland outfit.

It’s also a return to Europe for the 32-year-old winger following two years spent playing in America for Chicago Fire.

Speaking after penning a three-year deal, the ex-Liverpool star said: “It fills me with pride and I am very happy that I can return to my hometown of FCB today.

“I have had a deep connection with the club and the region since I was a child. As a fan and of course as a player.

“I completed my football training in Basel and was then able to launch my international career.

“Now I want to attack again with FCB and I can hardly wait to see our fans again.”

Arsenal starlet Charles Sagoe Jr has penned a new long-term deal at the Emirates.

And the 20-year-old has immediately been shipped off on loan to League One side Shrewsbury.

Sagoe Jr made his Arsenal debut last season where he started in the Carabao Cup win away at Brentford.

He then joined Swansea on loan in the winter transfer window, where he made two Championship appearances.

Commenting on the youngster’s arrival, Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst said: “He is a winger that we have been after for some time.

“He went away on tour, so we have had to be patient to get him in. But a player who we were interested in during the January window.

“He opted to go to Swansea, and I think that is understandable realistically for an opportunity at a club the league higher, it did not quite work out, but our interest remained, and I think the fact we had been in for him for some time has helped our case in getting him here now.

“We are hoping to get him up to speed. I mean that in terms of his pre-season has been a little bit different because of being away with the first team.”

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has confirmed that midfielder Conor Gallagher is back training at Cobham.

However he has stated the player, whose move to Atletico Madrid hangs in the balance, won’t feature against Manchester City on Sunday.

He said: “Conor is back and training a little bit apart. He is doing some medical tests and some training and he won’t be involved for this game.

“Also because in this moment, he is trying to find the solution with the club so we’ll see what happens.

“I said many times since we started, unfortunately these kinds of things happen every summer.

“All the clubs have some problems because players that want to leave, clubs want players to leave.

“But in the end, it finishes with all of them happy so hopefully for Conor, his situation ends with everyone happy.”

Martin Keown has warned Newcastle that they should stop their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The Magpies have had a club-record bid of £65million turned down by the Eagles – their fourth rejected offer for the England centre-back.

And Arsenal Invincible and talkSPORT pundit Keown believes Newcastle are not necessarily making a shrewd move by going after Guehi with such persistence.

Speaking to Jim White and Simon Jordan, he explained why he had reservations about the club’s dogged approach so far.

“I do think he’s a very good player,” he explained. “(But) I think there are limits.

“And I’m just wondering, this bravado – you know, there’s going to have to be a limit to what they can pay.

“I think they should step away at this point.”

Porto have confirmed the sale of star striker Evanilson to Bournemouth.

The Cherries have forked out a record £40million to bring the 24-year-old to the Vitality Stadium

Crystal Palace have rejected yet another bid from Newcastle for England defender Marc Guehi, talkSPORT understands.

The latest offer was worth around £65million but Palace are demanding more.

The Magpies could now explore alternative centre back targets.

Palace boss Oliver Glasner addressed Guehi’s situation earlier today, saying: “Marc trained today and we talked together. I’ve had no other information.

“I’ll have to look at my bank account and see if anything came in!

“We plan with Marc. He’s our player and our captain, I can’t tell you anything else.

“As long as no one tells me they will leave or the club tells me someone will leave, then we will work with them every day and prepare the team.”

Thomas Frank is hoping Ivan Toney will stay at Brentford for one more season amid ongoing speculation surrounding the striker.

Frank said: “The fresh news is he trained with a fresh smile, looked sharp, good attitude, he’s available for Sunday.

“Very much (satisfied to have Toney). As long as I have Ivan, I am very happy and that’s hopefully for another year because he’s a fantastic player. We’ve had four great years together and we’re hoping for another year.

“We know there’s speculation and back and forths but let’s just enjoy the moment and let’s look one day ahead and see what happens.

“Ivan’s biggest strength (is to be focused), he’s good at blocking (speculation) out and focus on training.

“He’s a positive character who enjoys football so it’s quite easy for him to want to play.”

Pep Guardiola is unsure if Man City will sign any more new players this summer following Julian Alvarez’s exit and Oscar Bobb’s injury.

He said: “Maybe. Or maybe not. We will see.

“I am really pleased with the squad we have. I can’t answer you right norigh

On Joao Cancelo’s uncertain future at the club, Guardiola said: “He’s still with us. We will see, maybe he stays or goes on loan.

“He’s behaving really well in the training sessions.”

And on Kalvin Phillips’ move to Ipswich, Guardiola added: “He decided to go there. He has to have minminute

“We thought he would not have the minutes he deserves. He has the chance in the future to maybe come

More Chelsea deals eyĺed

Enzo Maresca has refused to discuss Chelsea’s potential moves for Joao Felix and Victor Osimhen.

But the new Blues boss has said the club knows what he wants and he’s hopeful of more deals being done.

He said: “I’m not going to comment on Atleti and Napoli players.

“The club knows exactly what I think and hopefully before the window shuts we can bring in some more players.”

Asked about new signing Pedro Neto, Maresca added: “His physical condition is good.

“The only problem with Pedro is he has only been here for two or three days and needs to understand the way we want to play but he is completely fit.”

‘We are very much in love with our players’

Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal have ‘great’ goalscoring options already and has been working hard on improving his current squad.

Asked if he needs to sign a new centre-forward, he said: “We have great strikers already.”

And asked about top transfer target Mikel Merino specifically, he added: “You know I cannot talk about any other player.”

Arteta went on to comment: “Before the season we had two objectives.

“The main one was to make sure that we are very much in love with our players and find ways to improve them because that’s the main thing.

“And then are are certain opportunities in the market to improve the squad we have to look at that, that’s what we are trying to do.”

Gallagher update

Enzo Maresca has confirmed Conor Gallagher will not feature in Chelsea’s clash against Man City on Sunday.

Gallagher has been at the centre of a transfer saga all summer long and his move to Atletico Madrid has fallen through.

He is now back in Chelsea training but has been isolated away from the first-team squad.

Maresca has said the England midfielder is not in his plans and is hoping the situation will be resolved soon.

Maresca said: “Conor is back and he is training.

“He is dong some medical tests and training separately so he won’t be involved in this game.

“He is also trying to find a solution with the club, so we will see what happens.

“Unfortunately these things happen every summer.

“All clubs have problems but hopefully for him this situation will finish where the player, club and manager will be happy.”

Ipswich have confirmed their loan signing of Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The 28-year-old midfielder, who spent last season at West Ham, could make his debut for Kieran McKenna’s side against Liverpool on Saturday.

He said: “This is a day I’ve been waiting a number of weeks for now and I’m very happy to be here.

“I’ve had some great conversations with players I know here and also with the Manager, who I have obviously heard a lot about, and I’m excited to be here and be part of his team, playing how he likes to play the game.

“The conversations with Kieran McKenna and Mark Ashton have been really good and I followed Ipswich’s season closely last year, so I know the journey the Club has been on and it’s a great story which I’m now excited to be a part of.

“I want to play as many games as possible, enjoy playing football again and help the team win as many games as possible in the Premier League.”

McKenna added: “We are very happy to have Kalvin here and he is a fantastic signing for the football club.

“He is of course a high-calibre, experienced midfielder who has played at the highest levels of the game, in both club and international football.

“He’s had a fantastic career up until this point and we believe he is going to be a big addition to the group.

“Kalvin has much to offer us in terms of his qualities both on and off the ball, and he is a really humble and likeable character. He has been a key member of a newly-promoted team in the Premier League before and of course made a big impression for Leeds United during that period.

“Like all players who come here we want to try and help them improve, whether that’s a younger player or one with more experience. That’s a big part of our culture and we’re sure Kalvin can make some big steps with us to help him and the Club have a really positive season.”
