‘Once a Gooner’ – Arsenal fans poke fun at Granit Xhaka as transfer admission comes back to bite him in emphatic fashion

Arsenal fans were quick to taunt Granit Xhaka on his Emirates return following the 4-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

The ex-Gunners midfielder left the club to join the German outfit last summer – going on to win the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal with them.

Last month, Xhaka riled up some Gooners by stating that signing for Leverkusen wasn’t a backwards step, and was in fact the opposite.

He said: “The move from Arsenal to Leverkusen was not a step back, but rather two steps forward.”

But unfortunately for the Switzerland international, his former side easily made light work of his current one off in emphatic fashion in a pre-season friendly clash on Wednesday.

Arsenal won 4-1, courtesy of goals from Oleksandr Zinchenko, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, with Bayer’s Adam Hlozek grabbing a late consolation in the second half.

Aside from the scoreline, things got worse for Xhaka as he played accidentally passed his attempted block in the box to Havertz to fire home.

Xhaka was a fan favourite at the Emirates, and was still treated as such for the occasion – but Gunners fans on social media couldn’t resist taking the opportunity to have a cheeky poke at his ‘two step forwards’ remark.

“Granit Xhaka 2 steps forward and conceded 2 goals in 9 mins!” one wrote.
