Latest Liverpool transfer news and gossip as the Reds continue to be linked with potential new signings as the squad prepares to travel to the United States for pre-season

Ederson of Atalanta has been linked with Liverpool

The clock is ticking for Liverpool to complete their summer transfer business. It’s near the end of July but there is yet to be a new signing walk through the door at Anfield.

A lack of business has led to some concern among sections of Liverpool supporters. Arne Slot is the new head coach of the Reds and has been busy assessing the squad during the early stages of pre-season training.

Slot will be working behind the scenes with Richard Hughes, who is also in the early days of his tenure at Liverpool with his role as sporting director. Decisions over new signings will likely be made after the Reds return from their pre-season trip to the United States early next month.

The transfer window closes on September 2 and that is just one date that will be in Liverpool’s mind over the next couple of months. Another is the opening day of the Premier League season against Ipswich Town on August 17.

Before then, Liverpool will face Real Betis, Arsenal and Manchester United in pre-season friendlies. After those matches, the Reds will return to Merseyside to play their final friendly of the summer against Sevilla at Anfield.

It’s when Liverpool return from their trip across the Atlantic that the transfer business may ramp up. That will apply to outgoings as well as incomings.

The goalkeeping department is expected to remain unchanged despite links to the contrary. Both Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher have been tentatively linked with moves away, but are expected to be pivotal members of the Liverpool squad in the forthcoming season.

Defence is where we could see some changes, with one guaranteed after Joel Matip’s exit on a free transfer. Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah will look to be part of the Liverpool squad this season, but another player could be on the move.

Sepp van den Berg spent last season on loan at Mainz and has previously outlined his desire for a transfer away from Anfield this summer. If the Reds were to get £20 million for his signature that would represent decent business for the club.

That money could also go towards the funding of new signings, with several centre-backs being linked with moves this summer. Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi is the player whose name has been mentioned on the Reds rumour mill the most in recent weeks. The Eagles could demand upwards of £65 million after Guehi impressed for England at Euro 2024.

Midfield is also an area of the squad that could see some new signings. Atalanta star Ederson has been linked throughout the summer, with the rumours resurfacing in recent days.

Thiago Alcantara has already left the club and retired from professional football, where he is now a coach at Barcelona. It remains to be seen if the Reds will look to sign a replacement for the 33-year-old, who made just one five-minute cameo across the entirety of last season.

The forward line is the area of the squad where the most changes could happen. Luis Diaz has been heavily linked with a move away from Anfield this summer, but the Reds are only likely to sanction an exit if a sizable offer is made and if a replacement is found.

Such a replacement could be Anthony Gordon at Newcastle United. Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams has also been linked, although it seems more likely that the Spain international could move to Barcelona instead.

Recently, Real Sociedad star Takefusa Kubo has emerged as a potential target for Liverpool, although there are conflicting reports of how close a deal could be. A new right winger to follow in Mohamed Salah’s footsteps as the Egyptian’s successor may be on the agenda this summer, but for now that remains nothing more than speculation.
