Newcastle could sell Gordon to Anfield as they were ready to make swap transfer.

NEWCASTLE UNITED were allegedly “ready to sell” Anthony Gordon to Liverpool this week – and could still offload him before TOMORROW.

The 23-year-old winger is currently on Euro 2024 duty with England and preparing to face Slovakia in the last-16 on Sunday.

However, the ex-Everton star could have been heading back to his home city of Liverpool in a stunning move, according to a shock new report.

The Daily Mail claims that the Magpies were willing to cash in on Gordon as “they strive to comply with financial rules”.

And they state that they may still sell him before the end of tomorrow – the same day he hopes to fire the Three Lions into the quarter-finals in Germany.

The deal with Liverpool was “said to include defender Jarell Quansah heading in the opposite direction” but it “was not right” for the Reds.

New boss Arne Slot was loath to lose the 21-year-old defender, who was part of England’s provisional Euro squad.

Liverpool also have plenty of options already out wide, although they would reportedly “have proceeded had the package been different” but eventually “did not make an offer after discussions” with Newcastle chiefs.

But the article also states that “there is a chance talks could be revived over the weekend”.

Even though he is with England at the Euros, a medical for a switch to Anfield was mooted for Leipzig.

It has also been claimed that French giants Paris Saint-Germain are also keen on Gordon, who suffered a nasty fall while with England this week.

Gordon was one of the top performers for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle last term but the club need to sell before midnight on Sunday in order to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules.

If they don’t then they risk a potential Premier League points deduction.

This report says that “sources have confirmed that selling Gordon, albeit reluctantly, is one avenue that has been explored” by them.

The attacker, who has just been voted the club’s player of the season, enjoys playing under Howe and is happy to stay on Tyneside but “he was aware” of the talks between them and his boyhood team Liverpool.

Howe obviously does not want to lose his £45m signing from January 2023 but “there is an acceptance the club needs to trade to meet PSR” regulations.

But despite the discussions to offload Gordon, Newcastle have already had talks elsewhere over a potential replacement for him.

This same report claims Toon and Nottingham Forest are exploring a transfer package for Swedish winger Anthony Elanga, 22, that could see Elliott Anderson, 21, head to the City Ground.

That is one of several proposals Newcastle are exploring as they aim to raise the money to meet PSR guidelines by tomorrow’s accounting deadline.
