Managing Liverpool: Rodrygo signs and Mohamed Salah leaves as Arne Slot launches £281m rebuil

The summer transfer window opens in a couple of weeks and Liverpool are expected to welcome a few new faces to Anfield

Arne Slot will be determined to put his twist on the Liverpool squad this summer, and some difficult calls will need to be made. The Reds hav already been heavily linked witheveral big names but, for now, it remains to be seen whether or not John Henry will grant the Dutchman the necessary funds to bolster his team.

Last year, Liverpool splashed the cash on four midfielders; Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo. In 2022, Jurgen Klopp forked out almost £150million on Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo – two forwards – so perhaps the Reds may finally reshuffle their defence.

While Jarell Quansah enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough campaign, which earned him a maiden senior England call-up, there’s still plenty of uncertainty across the backline. Joe Gomez predominantly featured at full-back this term, while Virgil van Dijk sees his contract at Anfield expire in June 2025.

Not to mention Joel Matip, who’s set to leave the club following the expiration of his deal next month. Unfortunately for Slot, he’ll need to strengthen more than just his defence if he wants to challenge for the Premier League title

Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz are among a few other Liverpool players who also face uncertain futures. So, with that being said, the Liverpool Echo has looked at what business Slot should complete this summer.

Salah and Diaz lead Liverpool fire sale

Before Slot welcomes any new faces to Anfield, Liverpool must conduct something of a fire sale.

Players will need to be offloaded to not only give the club a new lease of life, but to also generate substantial funds to bankroll a spending spree. Firstly, Thiago, Matip and Adrian will depart

Next, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk need tying down to long-term deals. The duo see their respective contracts expire next year and, with Slot eager to stamp his authority on the Liverpool team, they’ll be paramount to a smooth transition.

Mohamed Salah also sees his deal at Anfield expire in 2025. While the 31-year-old forward would of course be a vital member of the Dutchman’s side next season, he was heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia last summer so the Reds should cash in before it’s too late

Al-Ittihad had a verbal £150m offer for the Egyptian rejected last summer, the Liverpool Echo understands. It’s believed that Saudi Pro League sides will try their luck again this year if they’re given any hint of encouragement that he might look to move on.

However, following confirmation of Slot’s appointment at Liverpool on Monday, Salah suggested he would remain at Anfield next season. On X, formerly known as Twitter, he wrote: “We know that trophies are what count and we will do everything possible to make that happen next season. Our fans deserve it and we will fight like hell.”

Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez also face uncertain futures at Liverpool. The duo, who are valued at a combined €160m (£131m) by CIES, have been heavily linked with moves to Barcelona recently, and their exits would also generate significant funds.

So, by selling Salah, Diaz and Nunez, Liverpool could potentially raise around £280m to spend on new players – on top of how much the owners make available for Slot…
