Chelsea news as the Blues struggle early on against Liverpool and nervy Moises Caicedo treads fine line in Carabao Cup final

Moises Caicedo committed several fouls in the first half against Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp certainly disagreed with Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher as he felt that Chelsea were lucky to keep all of their players on the field after a first-half tackle from Moises Caicedo resulted in Ryan Gravenberch being taken off injured during the Carabao Cup final. The two midfielders collided on the right side of the Blues’ defence with Gravenberch feeling the full force of the impact on his ankle.

With a host of Liverpool players already out through injury it was yet another blow for Klopp to deal with and he left his fury be known on the touchline. Referee Chris Kavanagh felt that there was nothing to it, though, with no booking given despite Gravenberch going off on a stretcher.

As the most contentious moment of a tight first 45 that Chelsea had been on the back of, it seemed to split those in the stadium with Klopp expressing his anger at the lack of punishment. “I think he’s caught his foot on his [Gravenberch’s] foot,” said Mike Dean on commentary. “It’s a bit like yesterday [with Harry Maguire], but not as severe, Chris [Kavanag] has tried to play on, the second one it’s not a foul.”

Maguire was deemed not have done enough to get a red card for a late tackle on Fulham midfielder Sasa Lukic on Saturday. Caicedo, however, wasn’t even booked for the incident. “For me it could’ve been a caution, or come back to book him, it’s the second foul from Caicedo so he’s treading a fine line,” Dean added.

“I know the VAR can’t inform the referee but tackles like that, he’s seen a foul, tried to play on that’s when you say to the referee: ‘it’s not serious foul play but it’s a yellow card’. It is a yellow card offence, no doubt whatsoever.”

Caicedo’s foot landed on Gravenberch and the players slipped, leading to a buckled ankle. There was no VAR review of the decision
