Liverpool broke a remarkable 128-year record in their win over Luton, no club will match it for a long time
Liverpool broke a long-standing record during their comeback win over Luton Town.

On Wednesday night, Jurgen Klopp’s men welcomed Luton to Anfield looking to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points.

However, Liverpool were stunned by Chiedozie Ogbene’s goal in the 12th minute.

In the second half, the Reds moved up the gears as goals from Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott sealed a 4-1 comeback victory.

Diaz became the fifth Liverpool forward to reach double figures for goals this season when he made it 3-1, breaking a record which stood for 128 years.

According to Opta’s Michael Reid, this is the earliest Liverpool have had five players with 10+ goals since the 1895/96 season.

Reid wrote on social media: “Luis Díaz is the fifth player to score 10+ goals for Liverpool this season, after Salah (19), Jota (14), Núñez (13), and Gakpo (11) – in Liverpool’s 39th game.

“This is the earliest into a season as a top-flight club that #LFC have ever had 5 different players reach 10+ goals.”

He added: “The only two seasons Liverpool had five players on 10+ goals sooner than this were 1893-94 (32nd game) and 1895-96 (24th) – when they were in the second tier.”

Speaking after the match, Klopp said: “Tonight is one of those nights where it is difficult to stop talking. I am so happy.

“We had to ignore the fact we were 1-0 down and use the things that are good and improve the counter-press. The second half was a thunderstorm. Wow.”

Liverpool will be focused on this weekend when they take on Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Manchester City and Arsenal have the chance to cut Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League if they beat Bournemouth and Newcastle United respectively.
