Liverpool injury news and expected return dates ahead of the Premier League clash at Brentford on Saturday, February 17

Liverpool immediately returned to the top of the table with a 3-1 win over Burnley on Saturday in front of the biggest-ever Premier League crowd at Anfield. While the Reds were not at their swashbuckling best, it should not be forgotten that they were missing 11 first-team players. And salt was then rubbed into the wounds when Trent-Alexander Arnold was forced off at half-time.

With a free week to prepare for Saturday’s clash at Brentford, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will hope that the extra time will give the players who missed the victory against the Clarets time to recover from the sickness bug that has hit the squad. While there is even a chance that talismanic top-scorer Mohamed Salah, who has posted a new fitness update, could be back after a month on the sidelines.

Ibrahima Konate will definitely be back from suspension, while Conor Bradley could return after being granted compassionate leave following the sad passing of his father.

But Klopp is still set to be a missing a number of players for the trip to west London to take on a Brentford side who have not lost at home to Liverpool since winning promotion from the Championship.

And, ahead of the 12.30pm kick-off, we take a look at the players the Reds currently have sidelined through injury and illness and when they are expected to return…

Mohamed Salah

Salah was, as expected, absent against Burnley, but Klopp hinted on Friday that the forward could be fit to face Brentford. The 31-year-old has been stepping up his recovery at the AXA Training Centre after suffering a hamstring injury in Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations clash with Ghana on January 18.

Klopp said: “Mo is going in the right direction. We hope, but we don’t know, that he can be a part of parts of training next week. But we have to see. He is going through all the paces now and it looks positive. It’s either next week or the week after. If you ask him, it’s next week.”

Expected return date: Brentford (A), February 17

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Klopp has confirmed Alexander-Arnold has suffered a recurrence of his knee injury. The Liverpool manager said after the win over Burnley: “His knee again? Yes, it felt like that. He got it stuck in the grass and we will see. We have [to send for] assessment.

“Same area in the knee. Nothing really bad, but he felt it again and we have to see, we have to assess it. Trent said it’s fine, but it’s not fine [because] he feels it so we had to be careful and took him off.”

Expected return date: Unknown

Alisson Becker

Klopp was coy about Alisson Becker’s condition after the Reds goalkeeper missed the match with Burnley with flu. He said: “Ali (Alisson) is out with, well, I don’t know.”

Joe Gomez

Klopp did confirm though that versatile defender Joe Gomez was definitely missing through flu.

Expected return date: Brentford (A), February 17

Ryan Gravenberch

Ryan Gravenberch was named on the bench against Burnley and remained there. Afterwards, Klopp said the midfielder “felt something” during the warm-up.

Dominik Szoboszlai

Rumours emerged before the recent top-of-the-table encounter at Arsenal that Dominik Szoboszlai hadn’t travelled with the Liverpool squad to the capital. And Klopp confirmed before kick-off that the injury the Hungary captain had sustained in the New Year’s Day win over Newcastle United had flared up again.

Providing a further update ahead of the home encounter with Burnley, the Reds boss said: “”The muscle is not big but the tendon is the problem and the tendon is not painful, which means the player is like: ‘I’m fine, let’s go’. And he is obviously not used to getting injured with this kind of thing.

“He had long-term problems at Salzburg but pretty much since then he could play. He came to Leipzig with a problem but could pretty much play all the time after that. He is not the most patient person. We don’t know (about the Carabao Cup final with Chelsea on February 25).

“If you ask him he plays the final definitely but I don’t know. He will see. He is running outside. Some players I see running outside and i think okay they are back and then it can still take a while. We have to see.”

Expected return date: Unknown

Thiago Alcantara

Thiago Alcantara came on as a late substitute in that aforementioned game with Arsenal in what was his first appearance since last April. However, the desperately unfortunate midfielder is now nursing a new hamstring injury.

“Thiago is not cool,” said Klopp. “Everything looked absolutely fantastic in training, they showed quite a lot of moments on LFC TV in training and it looks outstanding. We thought take him (to Arsenal) and the opportunity to play a few minutes and then it’s a muscle issue. We don’t know the extent yet, we have to wait a little bit but it’s not cool. It’s really not good news for him, for us or everybody.”

Expected return date: Unknown

Stefan Bajcetic

Stefan Bajcetic has endured a frustrating period in his fledgling Anfield career after a number of injury problems. He enjoyed a strong debut campaign last season but saw it end prematurely after suffering a stress response in his adductor in March.

Bajcetic returned in September with outings in the Carabao Cup and Europa League but his involvement against LASK Linz proved to be his last after suffering a calf issue. It remains unclear when he will return to full training,.

Expected return date: Unknown

Joel Matip

Joel Matip is recovering from surgery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The 32-year-old, who is the final months of his contract at Liverpool, is likely to miss the rest of the season. The centre-back was left stricken in the 70th minute of the dramatic Premier League 4-3 win over Fulham in December after an off-the-ball incident.

Expected return date: Unknown
