‘If it wasn’t Xavi, I would have fired the manager in this situation’ – Laporta

Barcelona president Joan Laporta said he would have parted company with most head coaches in Xavi’s situation but accepted his decision to resign at the end of the season because of the former midfielder’s status at the club.

Xavi announced he would be stepping down in June after Barcelona’s home defeat to Villarreal left them 11 points behind La Liga leaders Girona. Laporta said he would usually not permit such circumstances “if it wasn’t Xavi”.

On the possibility of sacking Xavi before June, Laporta said: “If it’s down to me, I won’t fire Xavi. He does not deserve that. He truly believes in that formula we have set up until the end of the season.

“Barca won’t give up in La Liga or the Champions League and we have a squad good enough to compete and win against Napoli. We don’t doubt how involved the management and players are.

“If it wasn’t Xavi, I would have already fired the manager in this situation.”

Laporta: ‘Certain things Barcelona can’t offer’ as Bergvall choses Tottenham

Barcelona president Joan Laporta says “there are certain things the club can’t offer” after Lucas Bergvall chose to join Tottenham Hotspur instead of the Spanish side.

The 18-year-old midfielder has emerged as one of Europe’s most coveted prospects and it appeared he would be signing for Barcelona, but The Athletic reported yesterday he had instead opted to join Spurs.

Laporta said Barcelona had sent a formal proposal to Bergvall but claimed Tottenham’s offer was more lucrative.

“Everyone says he is a great player and Deco has been monitoring him for months,” Laporta said.

“We have sent a formal proposal for him and are waiting for an answer. The English clubs have a lot of resources and sometimes it’s difficult for us to compete with them.

“We know Tottenham want him too and they offered way more money than we do. We have a lot of extremely talented 17-year-olds and there are certain things that we, as a club, can’t offer.”

Newcastle’s Tindall suggests technical area rules introduced for him

Jason Tindall believes the Premier League’s regulation to ensure only one member of backroom staff is in the technical area at any one time was brought in this season to target Newcastle United.

The assistant head coach took media duties ahead of Newcastle’s home match against Luton Town tomorrow, with Eddie Howe absent due to “illness”. Howe is expected to take training today and be on the touchline tomorrow.

Tindall is arguably the most-visible assistant in the Premier League and in previous seasons he has stood alongside Howe in the technical area throughout entire matches. However, a fresh directive for the 2023-24 campaign means that only one member of coaching staff can be on the touchline at any specific time.

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, even said that “it’s only a problem for one team, Newcastle,” in August.

“It probably was!,” Tindall said, chuckling, when asked if it was introduced in response to his presence alongside Howe, and insisting he does not intend to get under other coaches’ “skins”. “But I always say I’ve never got any problems if any opposition coaching staff want to go and stand up alongside their manager to help their team or to talk or whatever it is. I’ve never got any problems with that for me and to us.

“I think you have to sort of do it in a respectful way and you have to be abide by the rules. I think we’ve done that well this year. Sometimes I might get a little bit carried, from time to time, but I always get dragged back into my place by the fourth official and that’s fine. The rule is the rule and you have to abide by it. I think it’s been fine this year.”

Tindall has risen from League Two to the Premier League with Howe, his former Bournemouth team-mate, and the pair have always stood together on the touchline throughout the divisions.

“We’ve responded to it all right, honestly, I’ve not received any yellow card or caution so it must be going OK,” Tindall said. “We’ve been working together for a long time, it’s something we’ve always done from League Two right to the Premier League. It took a little getting used to.”

Fulham’s Vinicius close to joining Galatasaray on loan

Fulham striker Carlos Vinicius is close to joining Galatasaray on loan for the remainder of the season.

The west London club had looked to strengthen their attacking options in January, particularly after it was confirmed that Raul Jimenez will miss a number of weeks with a hamstring injury. They completed a loan move for Chelsea forward Armando Broja on deadline day.

Broja signed for a loan fee of £4 million that could drop to zero after a certain number of appearances, but Fulham also wanted to move a player on if they were to recruit.

Vinicius has fallen down the pecking order of late, starting just once in the Premier League this season.

Rodrigo Muniz, 22, had become Marco Silva’s preferred deputy to Jimenez.

Galatasaray sit second in the Turkish Super Lig, level on points with leaders Fenerbahce. The Turkish transfer window closes on February 9, therefore there was not the same urgency to complete the deal before close or play last night.

The 28-year-old’s contract runs until 2025, with Fulham retaining an option to extend for a further year

Isak could feature in Newcastle vs Luton – Tindall

Isak could feature in Newcastle vs Luton – Tindall

Newcastle United assistant head coach Jason Tindall says striker Alexander Isak could be involved in their Premier League clash against Luton Town this weekend.

Isak, 24, suffered a suspected groin injury in Newcastle’s midweek victory at Aston Villa, having been replaced just before half-time for Miguel Almiron.

Eddie Howe said at the time that he didn’t think Isak’s problem looked too serious, but Tindall has urged caution over his return, confirming he will need to be assessed further to determine his availability for Saturday.

Tindall, who was stepping in for Howe with Newcastle’s head coach unwell, said: “He’s a lot better, he’s improved. Wednesday, Thursday and then this morning there’s been improvement.

“He’s a one we’ll have to assess after today. He’s got a chance to be involved tomorrow but we’ll speak to the medical team and see.”

Tindall also provided updates on Harvey Barnes, who hasn’t played since September, Callum Wilson, Joe Willock and Jamaal Lascelles, adding they are all close to returning from injury.

“There’s a potential (for Barnes). There’s a couple of lads getting closer. Once training is done today you assess the squad and see where everybody is.

“It’s certainly getting better. Harvey, Callum Wilson and Joe Willock are all pretty close. If they’re going to be fit enough to be involved tomorrow, we’ll wait and see.

“Harvey and Callum are probably a little bit ahead of Joe, but there’s a question mark about all three of them. We have to make the right call.

“He’s (Lascelles) very close and we’ll have to assess him after today to see how he is but he’s certainly not far away.”

Arsenal have sold the naming rights for their London Colney training ground to Dubai real estate company Sobha Realty.

The complex will now be renamed the Sobha Realty Training Centre.

As part of the agreement, Sobha Realty will also become the official training kit sleeve sponsor for the men’s and women’s teams.

Arsenal Sporting Director, Edu, said: “This is a very exciting agreement that will help us develop the best possible environment for our men’s and women’s players, coaches and support staff for years to come.”

The Deals Arsenal did and didn’t do – and what it means for the summer

The January transfer window has come and gone and Arsenal have finished it much as they started it. A combination of budgetary constraints and a lack of viable targets means they will go into the second half of the campaign without having strengthened their squad.

“It wasn’t possible,” Mikel Arteta responded on Monday when asked about Arsenal’s failure to recruit. “We didn’t have the capacity to improve the team in the way that we think we want to improve it. So we decided not to do something yet.”

Given that “yet” came just three days before the deadline, there was no real expectation of a significant January addition.

The Athletic explains the limited business Arsenal did get done, what they didn’t, and what it means for the summer.

Moyes questions scheduling Premier League fixtures on deadline day

David Moyes has questioned the scheduling of Premier League fixtures on transfer deadline day after his West Ham United side faced Bournemouth hours before the January window closed.

Pablo Fornals was not involved in the West Ham squad after he was the subject of a €8million (£6.8m; $8.7m) bid from Real Betis but was in attendance at the London Stadium.
