Liverpool fans ask why Brighton star wasn’t sent off after being “shafted” again
Liverpool were held by Brighton on Sunday, but some Reds supporters were left adamant that Jurgen Klopp’s side should have had a man advantage in the second half

Liverpool fans have been left fuming that Pascal Gross was not sent off after giving away a crucial penalty against the Reds.

Gross’ Brighton had taken an early lead in Sunday’s clash, before Mohamed Salah equalised for the visitors. Then as half-time was edging closer, Gross pulled down Dominik Szoboszlai in the area, making no apparent attempt to play the ball.

Referee Anthony Taylor awarded a penalty, a decision that was confirmed by VAR Craig Pawson, with Gross avoiding any further punishment. But eagle-eyed Liverpool fans have spotted a rule that suggests the German should have been sent for an early bath, rather than stay on the pitch.

A third said: “Sky Sports confirming that Pascal Gross should have been sent off as there was no attempt to play the ball. Shafted yet again.” A fourth predicted a fresh apology from the PGMOL, writing: “Pascal Gross should have been sent off for pulling Szoboszlai’s shirt. VAR should have picked up on it. Looks like we might be getting another statement from PGMOL.”

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was less sure that Gross’ actions deserved a red-card. He insisted he would wait for an “expert” view before forming an opinion on the incident, as he pulled back from blasting the match officials.

Klopp told Sky Sports: “I don’t know. I really have no idea. If the foul is in the penalty box then its a yellow card I think. I don’t know. Don’t talk to me about rules. I take what I get. I trust if an expert maybe would have said, I don’t know.”

The Brighton camp was also confident that no red card offence had been committed. Seagulls captain Lewis Dunk insisted there was enough cover that Szoboszlai did not have a true goalscoring opportunity.
