Liverpool ‘dealt blow over exceptional midfielder’ and other transfer rumours

Here is a round-up of the latest transfer rumours surrounding Liverpool, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Exequiel Palacios and Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes

Liverpool have been dealt a potential blow over reported target Exequiel Palacios.

The defensive midfielder has made a name for himself at Bayer Leverkusen since joining in 2020 and was linked with a move to Anfield in the final days of the summer window. Palacios, 24, was part of the Argentina squad that won the World Cup and was touted as a possible signing for the Reds before a deal was struck with Bayern Munich for Ryan Gravenberch.

The Athletic reported that Palacios had caught Liverpool’s ‘attention’ last month but that Leverkusen were determined to keep hold of the midfielder. It appears that Xabi Alonso’s side have got their wish, with the Argentine signing a new contract until 2028, much to the delight of sporting director Simon Rolfes.

“Exequiel has often and successfully put his exceptional power and aggression on the pitch as well as his strategic and playing qualities to the benefit of our team,” he said. “We are convinced he can assume an even more key role in the future.”
