GOAL rates Liverpool’s players from Turf Moor…

Goalkeeper & Defence

Alisson Becker (6/10):

A spectator for much of the game. One misplaced pass apart, he didn’t put a foot wrong when he was called upon.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (5/10):

Couldn’t quite get into the game from a creative point of view as he has in recent weeks. Had a couple of dodgy defensive moments, too.

Jarell Quansah (7/10):

Another assured showing from the youngster, even if he wasn’t tested that much aside from one spell in the second half.

Virgil van Dijk (7/10):

Exuded class throughout. His mere presence seems to intimidate opposition forwards.

Joe Gomez (7/10):

Filled in admirably at left-back as Burnley targeted his side to launch attacks. Got forward well to support attacks, too.

Midfield

Harvey Elliott (7/10):

An energetic presence in midfield. Unfortunate to have a fine goal disallowed early in the second half before being replaced shortly after.

Wataru Endo (5/10):

Broke up play at times but still doesn’t do enough with the ball when he gets on it, especially against lesser teams. Poor pass almost gifted Burnley a late equaliser.

Ryan Gravenberch (6/10):

Showed good poise in midfield but lacked a bit of cutting edge. Still waiting for his breakout Premier League performance.

Cody Gakpo Liverpool 2023-24Getty Images

Attack

Mohamed Salah (4/10):

Struggling to have the same overall impact as he was earlier in the season. Cut a frustrated figure at times.

Darwin Nunez (7/10):

Superb finish broke the deadlock early. Unlucky that a couple of other nice touches around the box didn’t come off, but was much brighter than his attacking colleagues.

Cody Gakpo (7/10):

Excellent in build-up play, particularly in creating Nunez’s opener. Will wonder how he didn’t get on the scoresheet after missing a host of first-half chances and having a fine strike disallowed.

Subs & Manager

Curtis Jones (6/10):

On for the final quarter of the game and maintained some energy in midfield.

Dominik Szoboszlai (5/10):

Left out for the first time in the Premier League all season and missed a great chance to seal the points shortly after coming on.

Luis Diaz (5/10):

Pretty quiet after replacing Gakpo down the left, though did force Trafford into a late save.

Diogo Jota (7/10):

His late return will be a huge boost as Liverpool’s forwards have faltered without him, and he showed what he can do with his fine late finish.

Jurgen Klopp (6/10):

Freshened his team up and Nunez repaid him for bringing him back into the line-up. Still needs to figure out a way to get more out of his forward line.

NO GOAL!

Relief for Burnley, frustration for Liverpool!

Salah actually gets a shove from a Burnley defender into the offside position he takes up.

Trafford is also moving the wrong way when Elliott shoots.

But ref Paul Tierney has determined that the Egyptian did enough to impact the goalkeeper and the goal is scrubbed off!

Burnley 0-1 Liverpool

HT: There goes the half time whistle and Burnley can’t believe their luck: Liverpool should be out of sight.

Yes there’s a gap in quality but the home side have been far too respectful and given Liverpool so much space. Klopp will be pleased with what he’s seen – but I’m sure he’ll be saying to his players they need to put this game to bed early in the second half.

While it’s still 1-0 – courtesy of Nunez’s drought-breaking strike – Burnley are still in this match. However hard that is to believe.

GOAL! Burnley 0-1 Liverpool (Nunez, 6)

NUNEZ FINDS THE CORNER TO END HIS DROUGHT!

Gakpo does well down the left before teeing up Nunez in the D who almost sends a firm pass inside Trafford’s far post.

We’ve seen a couple of efforts from distance already but this one was spot on.

A lovely finish from a player who had gone nine without a goal!
