PGMO Chief Howard Webb provides clarification on Kai Havertz’s handball goal and extends his apologies to all Arsenal supporters.
Kai Havertz expressed his frustratuion as his late equalizer for Arsenal against Aston Villa was disallowed due to a handball incident. The German forward believed he had salvaged a point for his team, but the decision was overturned by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). In the dying moments of the match, Havertz made contact with the ball after it had struck Villa defender Matty Cash’s shoulder. The interpretation of handball rules in attacking situations has always been a subject of debate, with questions surrounding the intentionality and natural position of the arm. Referees may have differing opinions on what constitutes a deliberate handball, leading to varying decisions.
